Saints and Psychopaths - Bill Hamilton

Just a little quote from the book:

"If you want a short cut to spiritual development, consider Russian roulette. The odds are better and the chance of suffering from a mistake is less." (page 10)

So far I have read a couple of sentences that have had me laughing inside for a while, just the kind of acid humor I most enjoy.

Cheers,
Andy

It's out of print. The cheapest used copy on Amazon is $64. A like new copy is $114 to $200. On ebay they want $179 for one in good conditon. I don't think I'll be reading it, but will enjoy your comments.

Yeah I love that book. I have read the sections on enlightenment a couple times. I winced when I read about Bill reversing a vasectomy for that crazy bitch... that is some real honesty... I would love to hear Daniel and Kenneth talk more about what working with Bill was like... The way they both talk he seems like the godfather of hardcore dharma--well at least our little branches of it...

Same here! The Visuddhimagga isn't anywhere to be found in full, and what I can find is quite deserving of its reputation for density approaching inaccessibility.

Visuddhimagga and Vimuttimagga are two different works, written by two different people.

Full version of Visuddhimagga is here http://thepathofpurification.blogspot.com, there's a link to PDF on the right.

Or for another translation at archive.org: http://www.archive.org/details/pathofpuritybein01budduoft. I can't remember where I got two other parts of that translation, google for them.

Wow, the last time I was at that website, they only had about the first 1/3 of the Visuddhimagga available. Even though I prefer the writing style of the Vimuttimagga, I'm very appreciative to now have access to both of them in case one covers topics the other doesn't, or covers them in a substantially different way.

I'm reading the book online now. The unnamed teacher in New York that he and Ram Dass were involved with is Ma Jaya. She now has a center in Florida. She comes to Atlanta, where I live, several times a year. I did some weekends with her here about 8 years ago. She has a lot of energy and is fun to be around. I went into an altered states. I liked her, but did not feel like I wanted to get more involved with the group. I have read other criticism's of her behavior, including Ram Dasses criticism "Egg on my beard".

Here is her web site: http://www.kashi.org/majaya/
