Retreat In India

I belong to S.N. Goenka tradition of Vipassana practice.

Want to try out some other school (Theravada only) in India itself, can anyone recommend some place ?

My only criteria is the presence of a quality teacher.

Thanks,
Hemant

I think for Theravada teachers and retreats you want to go to Thailand or Sri Lanka, not India. But I am no expert.

Not much Mahasi in India that I know of, but you could check out the Bodh Gaya retreats of Christopher Titmuss and crew: I got stream entry on a retreat with him there using Mahasi methods. Malaysia, Thailand or, if you must, Burma are the place for Mahasi stuff. Sri Lanka has its own thing, as does the Thai Forest tradition (which is actually pretty wide, I think). Not much Buddhism in general in India, strangely. You can find a little in Bodh Gaya, plenty of Tibetans up North, and a few other little enclaves, but that's all I know of.

Thanks Daniel.

Christopher Titmuss sounds cool, have just finished listening to some of his discourses that were there on the web.

Will give it a try as soon as I get opportunity in life.

Thanks,
Hemant

Hemant,

In Bodh Gaya, there is one centre called "International Meditation Centre" following the Mahasi tradition of meditation. The Chief Abbott's name is Ven. Varasambodhi Thera. The phone number for the centre is +91-0631-2200707. It's very near to the bodh gaya temple. You may contact them. The centre is open through out the year for the meditation practice. They follow the Dhana Tradition
