I think that placing attention on ankle region of the feet is important. The way I do it is to alternate the attention on the ankles while having weight on them and then not having weight on them. Doing it this way leads me to find out the muscles which hold tension which is not required for balancing and then focusing on them can gradually lead to lessening of that tension. This can result in better left and right side balance.
