As others began to notice his laughter the entire meditation hall was overcome by a wave of rapturous joy and almost everyone began laughing which seemed to last about 30 seconds to a minute. The teacher up front seemed in shock at what to do to manage the situation and eventually in a booming voice said "keep your mind on sensation! If you cannot maintain silence and composure, leave the hall until you can."

The experience was amazing! It was fascinating to me how powerful the rapture was and was an intersting example and teaching of Annata (no separate/independent self).

I'm wondering if anyone else had had similar experiences of rapturous laughter during retreats?

Metta,

Drew

RE: Past life experiences: A place to share

Hi,

I think most of us were glad to see this thread die. I would suggest that if people want to talk about past life experiences then they should start a new thread. This thread has nothing to do with what the title would suggest.

RE: Past life experiences: A place to share

The funny thing - the joke on me -- is that I thought this thread was going to be entertainment about past lives identities one had assumed. I think it is appropriate in the right spirit and Buddha sometimes spoke of previous existences too.

I did a two-year stint of chronologically tracking my history as a being back to what appeared to be the original separation incident brought about by wanting to have a more persistent "dream". For educational purposes only, and it was entertaining. Did it get me any closer to Nirvana? No I don't think so from the way I approached it, but it did teach me about the games that we all have been playing and how we have wound down to this current life, sunk into grosser sensations.... Pizza anyone?

An almost unstoppable urge for vengeance entered into the games/interactions and games have been a lot less fun since then. The playing field was once almost always about win/lose (think bumper cars at the carnival), not victim/bully. "Oh, you crushed me, hahaha, that was a good play! Well done!" Games were more voluntary and we could leave a game at will and enter into a void state (sans energy, space, time).

Please don't take this as gospel, because I haven't seen the whole story of this universe yet.

The biggest hangup for me as a being was the craving for the sensation of aesthetics ("to-create" compulsions), among other lesser sensations. In the most recent eons up until now I suffered mostly from a consistent and painful involvement with these beings that I gave a name to but am not sure if that is accurate, who always appeared to me in huge black spheres. I would go into one end of the sphere and pop out the other end slightly mentally twisted and reduced as a being somehow. This went back for eons until finally I popped out of it when I arrived at the point in my history where I actually created these beings initially for my pleasure. Think "dragon queen mother".

I did have some lifetimes where I did seek a good path to nirvana as best I could given all my unbalanced and compulsive needs to play a game. That would be this lifetime too -- one of my best, most promising lifetimes regarding nirvana. I'm sooooo grateful. Thank god for the internet which is how I got my questions about the mind and the being answered. Life is a constant learning curve now.

Disclaimer: this is for entertainment purposes only and I would never swear on a stack of bibles that what I saw was the truth of it.

RE: Buddhist Nerds

Ohm.... We can write them here. Anyone out there rap and have recording capabilities? Many good insights about people spiritual motivations. I think the most obvious thing is that the persona and the costume allowed him to play outside of social norms. A huge, giant, beautiful ancient tree, with many branches. A tree of great power, whose power was closely guarded by its guardians, a race of giants.

Jimmy MacJimJim had heard of this tree, and yearned for its great power. But he came to the tree and was told that in order to reap the power of the tree he had to become a guardian of the tree, as only the guardians of the tree could be trusted with its power. But becoming a guardian was a long, and arduous task, involving great sacrifice. Jimmy didn’t like the sound of that.

But then he heard about a hermit who lived in a small cabin. People said he was crazy, but that he knew of the secret of the great tree. Jimmy approached the hermit, and begged the old man to tell him of the secret. The hermit, with a twinkle in his one-good eye, told him all he knew. Jimmy came away with a plan.

He went to the guardians of the tree, and offered to help them out for a while. While he tended the tree, he took one of its seeds, some fertiliser that the guardians had left around, and in the middle of the night, went back home.

He planted the tree in his garden. It grew well with the rich fertiliser. And one day, it started sprouting berries. And he ate them. But the berries had sour seeds, which didn’t please Jimmy, so he spat that part of the berry out. As he ate the flesh of the berries he became taller, just like the guardians of the tree. This pleased Jimmy. He had figured out the secret of the guardians and the tree! Each year, the tree blossomed new berries, and he ate every one. And Jimmy grew taller and taller. But as he grew taller, Jimmy also grew fatter. And fatter. He didn’t really notice, as he was so happy about getting taller, and he had always been a bit on the tubby side anyway. And so after many harvests, Jimmy had grown taller and taller. He was now even taller than many of the guardians. But he had become obese.

By this time the news had spread, and the guardians came to see. They looked on aghast. They were horrified! The guardians, while tall, were slim. They went away, shocked by what they had seen. Jimmy didn’t mind, he was tall, so tall! He had everything he had always wanted.
Others came to see. Some of those looked away in horror, just like the guardians. Others were amazed by the size of Jimmy, and asked if they could join him. Some of them were so entranced by how tall Jimmy was they didn't notice the obesity, and some of them just didn't care about getting fat. They just wanted to get tall. By this point Jimmy was so large that he couldn’t get through the doors of his house anymore, and had become rather lonely, so he encouraged people to join him in his garden. They too grew tall and obese eating the berries, though none of them could ever become quite as tall and obese as Jimmy.

Olaf had also heard news of the giant obese Jimmy. He came to watch from the outer gardens, fascinated yet repelled as to what he was witnessing. He tried asking them if they had noticed how obese everyone was, and whether there were other ways of growing tall without getting fat. But they didn't listen, as all everyone in the garden wanted to do was discuss how sweet the berries were and how tall they had become. Eventually they grew tired of the questioning, and said to Olaf, either you eat the berries and become fat and tall like us, or get out of the garden. Olaf didn't want to become fat, so he was cast out.

One day walking home, Olaf was drinking in a tavern. On the table next to him were some guardians (the tavern had a very large ceiling). His ears perked up, as he realised they were talking about Jimmy and the secrets of the giant tree of the far away land:
“If only Jimmy had stayed with us long enough to realise you have to eat the seeds as well!”

RE: Oaf Wots_ and the Magic Mountain

Droll Dedekind:

Oaf Wots_ and the Magic Mountain

Once upon a time there was a village beside a perilous mountain. According to local legend, adventurers who reached the summit of the mountain would be granted wondrous powers, bliss, and liberation. But, for hundreds of years none of the villagers dared try to climb the mountain. And, most didn't believe in such silly fairytales anyhow.

One day a cocky youth named Naiad Gremlin attempted the treacherous journey up the mountain. During his climb he was met with myriad trials, traps, and tricks. Many times he failed the climb; and many times he consulted the local legends and library for hints about completing the journey. After many attempts and over many years Naiad finally completed his journey. Atop the mountain he was transformed permanently. The change was dramatic, but not identical to the legends. Yet, Naiad was satisfied. Immediately he understood the grains of truth that had been the source for all the legends. He returned to the village and set to work writing a guide for scaling the mountain, along with a comprehensive map. In the guide Naiad tried to explain the real nature of the transformation, with mixed success.

The villagers reacted variously to the publication of his guide. Some scoffed haughtily, some yelled angrily, some cowered fearfully, and some perked eagerly. From the last group, a traveling party was soon formed. Many travelers offered to help Oaf up the mountain, but he would never climb higher than the base of the mountain. One man tried to convey the transformation to Oaf saying, 'The effect was unmistakable. There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this guy from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what he really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past five years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

Daniel M. When I saw a humor section was put in to make light of 'all this stuff' I had kind of assumed it would be you guys making fun of yourselves, which I thought was a genius idea because people tend to take themselves too seriously sometimes and also to not see their own flaws easily. And I'd never seen that kind of suggestion before as an official section of a board. However, the first 5 or so posts I clicked on just happened to be making a bit of fun of women and other groups, and not so much meditation, which can be shaky ground at times. Easy to offend when pointing fingers at others instead of self. Of course there are other posts more directly pointed as well. But I don't think the truth can easily be gauged by level of vague formulaic dogma present as all groups have it. And i do think that meditation dogma would also very easily also lend itself to similar formulaic generator programs that would produce weird sentences that could mean almost anything. Of course, you've already got koans so maybe there is no need.. ;-P
-Eva

RE: New-Age Wisdom

Eva M Nie:

Admittedly, such talk sounds quite corny but just curious, what part of this are we SURE is wrong? -Eva

Hi Eva. I personally do not hold some doctrine of general upwward progress being assured or actually even likely. This seems largely a Boomer thing that I find at best naive and at worst dangerous."

Yeah, I think probably nothing it 'automatic,' could be that such things could happen and maybe they will or maybe they won't. But if we all got told what happens at the end of the movie while we were still in the middle of it, wouldn't that take out most of the fun out of it? I don't know the whole future but I am leaving open the idea that it could be better and I don't really see positive thinking, even the vague and illogical sounding kind, as necesarily bad in and of itself. Sure positive thinking without action won't do much but thinking tends to lead to action at least some of the time. And I do think a counterbalance to Keeping up with the Kardashians, rampant consumerism, and poisoning the environment might be of some good in the long run. Yep, I do think a lot of it is cotton candy, but I can't say it is of no use or never will be. Very few people are going to spend millions of hours sitting on at mat kind of doing nothing just because some guy from thousands of years ago says there might be a kingdom of enlightenment and happiness awaiting them if they do. In fact, on the face of it, the whole thing sounds really really ridiculous, imo WAY WAY more stupid than being a nexus child (whatever that is!). That was my belief for most of my life, so it's easy for me to see the perspective of 'normal' people and how ridiculous it all sounds. Over time, I did come to believe there is important substance behind meditation, enlightenment, and a lot of other stuff. Not to say there isn't a ton of cotton candy everywhere too. In fact, over time, I find it really kind of amazing that everyone forms their own little private communities and laughs at the other communities, new agers, religions, yoga people, meditators, OBEers, lucid dreamers, remote viewers, and for the most part, they think the others are total lunatics and that only THEY have the right way of thinking of things. But really each of the groups has a hell of a lot more in common than they would like to admit! IMO, a lot of it has to do with perspective. If you start with the perspective that the other group has nothing to offer, kind of an us vs them perspective, you will tend to see only the aspects that support your pre existing view. In that story from my first post, my friend's brother's actions made perfect sense from his perspective and my friend's actions and beliefs made perfect sense from her perspective. Which perspective do other people see it from? What if you could see it from both perspectives at once and really understand both perspectives, then what would you think?

Sure, I have my personal opinions and what ways probably work best IMO currently. But then again, in the past I was wrong a TON. I was wrong so much I am an expert at being wrong. I practiced long and hard at being wrong and really became good at it. So now I figure to be on the safe side, its easier and safer to realize I just don't know and probably there is all kinds of super cool stuff I don't know yet and don't understand. I remember a while back when it was all the rage for new agers to talk about 'vibrations' and 'changing your DNA' and of course they got blasted to kingdom come by the scientific community and just about everyone else for saying things that were clearly impossible and stupid, and then some time passes and we start hearing about scientific knowledge of string theory, 'jumping genes' (aka transposons), epigenetics, etc, all stuff that really basically support that crackpot stuff. (horrors!) Of course the scientists cringe if their research is ever cited in such a way because in their mind only their stuff can be right and the new age stuff is always no good and of course they don't want the two things ever to appear in the same room together for fear their image and research will be forever tarnished. Personally, I think it's actually pretty funny. I don't know how much of the new agers stuff will turn out to be for the good, if any, but I don't know either if it will be for the bad. But maybe something that at least promotes kindness and improvement and yes, is even very likely QUITE responsible for the current popularity and mainstreaming of meditation might actually be an overall good thing in the long run.

RE: New-Age Wisdom

For me, some if it is definitely personal, as I honestly recognize that I have a hard time sortint out what are my views on some things that happened with some people who are into very similar views and my views on the views themselves. IMO, if various dogmas are moving in directions such that they are becoming more right than they used to be and if the (WARNING AIRY FAIRY TERMINOLOGY ALERT, HIDE NOW IF YOU CAN'T TOLERATE IT) spirit and energy of it are moving in a direction that seems better than is used to be, even if it's not all 100% perfect 100% of the time, I personally think it's pretty cool.
-Eva

RE: Easy Enlightenment (test pic)

carrot top:

I see a pair of boobs, so, yes, test successful.

me too, success!

RE: Easy Enlightenment (test pic)

RE: Easy Enlightenment (test pic)

The simplicity of the AF diagram really calls to my sensibilities.

RE: Easy Enlightenment (test pic)

I see a pair of boobs, so, yes, test successful.

RE: Easy Enlightenment (test pic)

Content format test
Noting Boldly Wherein I touch the deathless with my body, which is essentially jhana. In other words I witness the truth with my body. I am a living example of what the Buddha taught.

I too lately strive to touch deathless, though I have different names for it, usually just 'background', void, nibbana, God (when talking with Christians), etc. To feel good it have to be 'seen' at all times. there are sensations that do according to its will and those that do not. Second type are cause of dukkha and seem to be opaque. To solve issue of those rogue sensations all it take is to see that those do carry background with them as their source. That dispel their ignorance. Other type of sensations, those that do carry will of background (or whatever you wish to call it, may be 'God' too) are good from start but its important to remember and praise background and not sensations as they tend to get little self absorbing and arrogant when done so

I have no idea why no one here takes me seriously, but I suppose it has to do with my thirst for attention and the fact that I don't meditate in a formal sense

So even if you as a human being are with union with deathless (which is the same concept) you can't expect for enlightened people to praise you, we praise void not people/sensations that do experience it!. And as for unenlightened... style matters and yours is not very good at the moment ... ; )

I do practice jhana however, but it is not what you describe, which is basically throwing your mind at an object. Rather I am absorbed in contentment, secluded from sensual pleasures, witnessing this Dharma with my body.

meditation is like listing mind weights to build big and strong mind muscles. Too bad that it can take so much time for people to actually use those muscles where it matter. Doing stuff directly too build muscles and yeld results faster, so all I can say is good job

QUESTION: Do you have light in your being?

ps. For reference: I myself am not fully enlightened, merely at most 3rd path

RE: I am the Tathagata.

James Yen:

Ok disclaimer, even though I feel that I am the Tathagata, let's put that aside for now, because for all I know it could be some incredible twisted form delusion (even though I'm pretty certain I am). Let's put that aside.

When I speak of suffering I speak of the kind that you feel with your gut, deep inside, it is existential pain, it is the friction in the wheel cogs of a machine, it is "not rightness".

Something isn't right, there's this staticness, this murkiness, this angst, this pain, this friction.

There is this sorrow, lamentation, despair, aging, death, old age, grief, kinship with the unbeloved, separation from the loved.

In short: the five aggregates of clinging, are suffering.

None other than those things.

Now what do I mean when I say the end of suffering?

I mean the end of that not rightness, the fixing of the friction, the movement into lubrication, the utter peace and dispassion of Nibbana. I mean the full and complete fruition of the indriya and heedfulness such that one craves no more.

And via craving no more, realizes he is liberated.

That's all I got for now.

Okay, what you have stated makes perfect sense so far, First there is dukkha, and secondly there is something that starts up dukkha, it looks like that is craving.

Craving, maybe some of us don't know what craving is? Craving can be seen even in the behavior of the worms. For instance, a worm will move towards a pleasant sensation (say the warmth of the sun or wetness of the earth, , this would be the "I like it) side of craving, And also, a worm will move away from pain, or try to, say when ants are attacking its skin, or a bird pecks at its flesh, , a painful sensation, this is the (I dont like it mind) side of craving. So too a worlding moves throuh the world , the untrained mind attracted by pleasure and repulsed by pain. The untrained mind has no escape hatch to this situation and moves through life mindlessly reacting to one sensation after another, until death.

Okay, so there is Dukkha, and there is a source of dukkha in the mind, and thirdly you said earlier there is a stop to all this non-sensical dukkha, if I may ask,

Dear Tathagata, Is there a "way" that leads to the cessation of all this dukkha absurdity?

RE: I am the Tathagata.

RE: I am the Tathagata.

James Yen:

Paweł K:

James Yen:

I feel like I have to share, and be less stingy with my Dharma. Please ask, I will clarify all questions concerning this Dharma.

first it would be good if you write some kind of outline about general type of your enlightenment and what is needed to get there

is it the 'realistic' kind which is blissless and dry or something that is for a change interesting ?

It's literally just canonically what the Buddha taught.

It leads straight to the end of suffering, to cessation, to peace and dispassion. It is visible here and now. What is seen are the four noble truths, the path itself is the noble eightfold path.

I currently dwell in the state of a sekha, trainee. Wherein I touch the deathless with my body, which is essentially jhana. In other words I witness the truth with my body. I am a living example of what the Buddha taught.

I have no idea why no one here takes me seriously, but I suppose it has to do with my thirst for attention and the fact that I don't meditate in a formal sense.

I do practice jhana however, but it is not what you describe, which is basically throwing your mind at an object. Rather I am absorbed in contentment, secluded from sensual pleasures, witnessing this Dharma with my body.

Does that help?

Okay, since what you stated above coincides with common sense, I will go along with the question and answer game, supposing that since we live in the same universe, we are really all on the same team, right? So, game time, That is not the first question, here it is.

Dear Tathagata:

What is the root cause of suffering and unsatisfactoriness, the unease , the boredom, even my happy times are impermanent and do not last, what is the cause of this, it keeps happening over and over

RE: I am the Tathagata.

James Yen:

I didn't, no.

James I'm afraid you're going straight to hell.
