If awareness is placed on sound (to the point of it being not separate from the sound, being in the sound), then there are no thoughts.
If you find this to be correct in your case as well, then I think it can be used if your mind is going crazy with thoughts that won't stop, having trouble falling asleep, anything that has to do with excessive thinking.

Thanks for the link to the sound topic.
If you go into the nada sound and are not separate from it, then it will make the thoughts go away. If it stays just an object of meditation, chatter stays on.
