Just saw an interesting TV show called "Finding my Mind" on The Science Channel.
They did a scan of the hosts brain while awake and while unconscious (from anethesia). The difference seen was that while awake, different parts of his brain appeared be active and communicating with each other. While unconscious, different parts of his brain were active but not communicating with each other.

Also, they had the host wear goggles with TV monitors in them. They set up a camera a few feet behind him and projected an image of the back of his head to the goggles. It made him feel as if his "self" existed a few feet behind his body.
