Study says majority of Americans have had mystical experience

On page 61 of "After the Ecstasy the Laundry", Jack Kornfield says:

One famous study of American spiritual life found that the majority of those interviewed had had a mystical experience at some time in their life. However ... most of those people would not want it to happen again.

I would like to read more about this but Kornfield gives no footnote or reference. Do you know what this famous study of American spiritual life is?

No idea about which study but the book was published in 2000. Great book btw.
