Had a quick scan through the rest of the recommendations for reading materials on here and didn't see any mention of ol' Bob Wilson. I'd recommend the book "Prometheus Rising" to anyone just starting out in any form of magickal/mystical system of attainment and to anyone interested in models of experience.
He presents a model based on eight 'circuits' of consciousness which was originally developed by Timothy Leary, before he went all hippy-dippy guru, and I found it to be a very simple and elegant map which he combines elements of quantum physics, Crowley, Zen, Sufism, Gurdjieff, anthropology and many other areas to explain. He exemplified something he called 'model agnosticism', basically don't just believe what you're told, do it and use some reality testing which seems to sit nicely with this quote from the main page:
this place is about doing it and understanding for yourself rather than believing someone else and not testing those beliefs out
