What is moderator action, and how, specifically, is it requested? Is there a key word, like a safe word, that the moderator can use to locate the point specifically, by a search engine? Does the moderator generally have to wade through all this shit all the time, like a police car on routine patrol, or is a moderator request the radio-call type thing that makes him roll up his sleeves, take a deep sigh at karma being a bitch and dharma being a pain in the ass, drive to the requested location of the incident, and THEN wade through all the shit. Is it a single post request, a general tone, a black list?
I'm just asking for a friend.
love, tim

Posts: 2464 Join Date: 6/13/11 Recent PostsOkay, first of all, that is fucking great, and if i had any money, i would order the book. I feel capable of improving my capacity to be offended, and am inspired by this video to really move on toward becoming a fully really offendee.
But i'm still not clear what a moderator action is 1) triggered by, 2) does to address the call for action. i mean, if public tirades alone are the trigger . . . But this request for moderator action is something specific, and by the book, so what i'm really asking about is what section of which book to consult on this particular protocol loop.
For my friend, I mean.
(edit, p.s.) i'm a bit slow, and mis-read this thread badly from the start. I thought this was about you guys tangling on Advaita and Buddhism. I had noticed the ugly exchange as i went through T's log this morning, but didn't specifically registering that it was the two of you going at it, just that it was a shame now that T had to wade all that shit to see if someone had an insight into the fact that he was calmly noted sensations in his high chest and throat that had him wondering if he needed actual medical attention or what.
So fight it out here, Nicky. I would be offended if you didn't.

Oh, oh, on T's log. I misread-too-fast and assumed this was an "Advaita and Buddhism" thing. I didn't even notice who was going at it on T's log when i went through this morning, i just skipped all that shit and replied to his post. That was you and Nicky! Got it! Yeah, fight it out here, guys, really.

Posts: 2464 Join Date: 6/13/11 Recent PostsAlso, I just realized that this is about an exchange on T's log, not Advaita and Buddhism. I hadn't realized that was Malcolm and Nicky going at it there this morning. So I'm glad curious took this step, actually. This seems a proper gutter for the fight.
Does the flag function go to the top of the moderator's in-box somehow? Is malcolm's request-underscoring thread here actually more to offer a more appropriate alternative arena? If so, skillful means, i say. Have at it, gentlemen.

Also, it is actually hurting people here and now, on this forum.
EDIT: And here is the latest example from Lars practice log: Quoting Nicky: "The Jewish religion, for example, teaches "God" or "Yahweh" is the 1st cause. The Buddha taught "ignorance" is the 1st cause. Therefore, most people are blinded by ignorance and can do hurtful actions. "

Nicky has no interest in the cravings of fools. The Buddha said:

Posts: 2464 Join Date: 6/13/11 Recent PostsI take it pretty seriously that Malcolm is so riled up so fast. I know him well enough at this point to pay attention if he thinks something is important. I don't know you much at all, but it looks like the nama-rupa thread, which on my first pass through it struck me as way over my head technical and academic, might be my foot in the door.
The point is, this is the appropriate venue for this conversation at this point, and it should be rated NC-17 or whatever the DhO equivalent of x-rated is, to minimize toxic leakage and collateral damage to innocent bystanders mistaking it for a collegial discussion. This is the gutter appropriate to a gutter fight that seems to have some historical momentum and ripeness. I am interested myself. I only have one brown shirt, and it says "Tranter's Creek Campground, Washington, North Carolina" on it. If I am hanging out with Gestapo types here, as you suggest, it's just a matter of moments before i'll be off to the camps myself, so i have a dog in this hunt and skin in this game.

Posts: 77 Join Date: 2/6/20 Recent PostsLet me give an example here, of what can be directly interpreted as racism when it is not: You guys know of the Trudeau blackface incident. And he was immediately branded as racist. He might well be. I have no idea -- and he apologized -- so let's assume that he did have racist intent (or who knows, he was just playing a political game). What I know is that some white person might blacken their face because they admire a black person too -- just to show admiration and appreciation. All I'm saying is, we should not judge without looking carefully.
All this said -- I don't know any of the history here -- all I'm doing in is putting in some words which I think might mean some thing here ...

An actual touch of real humor, and a pace of conversation we can sustain, really would go far here. This shit is burning hot as fuck, it's like an underground fire in an old coal mine coming to the surface after years of burning underground. Let's go slow, and try to keep a uniform type-font-size, it seems Arial 16-point is the norm. Any other typographic emphasis is a raised voice, but let's set a baseline at this size and keep the indications of VOICE RAISING and emphatic assertiondistinct in the conversation, rather than just proceeding in an everescalatingdin.

I can't do that. This is how I burn out. And actually, I have seen exactly that been used as a strategy by organized nazis, wearing out and breaking down people who care by pushing all their buttons repeatedly in the name of reason and dialogue. When someone has backed into a corner, they need some space in order to get out from the corner. The great difficulty lies in giving them the space without taking it from those who are vulnerable to their "truth".

I really hope this doesn't ruin the moderator's breakfast. Isn't the real mess sort of cleaned up at this point?

Malcolm appears seriously deluded and anti-Buddhist.
Nicky has no interest in the cravings of fools. The Buddha said:
Let both laymen and monks think that it was done by me. In every work, great and small, let them follow me" — such is the ambition of the fool; thus his desire and pride increase.
Dhammapada
I apologize for letting your cat out of the bag, Nicky. I am habituated to sniff out gaping blind spots and zealots and can't help myself. To answer your question (I think was directed at me..?) - no, I'm not Jewish, though I wouldn't have a problem with it; I'm just an antagonist. I am blessed by my ancestors' kamma to have had a fortunate birth. I appreciate the information you share specifically interpreting the fundamental words of the Buddha - or at least as close to it as we can get in modern times. I dislike your lack of compassion. Hey, are you related to 9thAI?
Anyway - I'm sorry for outing you on the forum and making you unleash all sorts of weirdness. I was being intentionally antagonistic to do it, but now that I have, I regret it. I can see that simply reading the dharma obsessively and with zeal is insufficient and I will continue to strive mightily in my sitting practice.

You did set off a lovely and educational show, outing that dog-whistler on the forum and unleash all his weirdness in its glorious slow-dawning horror: learning AND entertainment! It's like the best meditation EVER.

It's good to appear nice. People underestimate you and let their guard down.
Which of course is not a problem if THEY are nice. Or at least appear so.
EDIT: P.S. Also not Jewish, not that it matters at all.

I have been in your position, T, as the one who spots it intuitively and provokes it. I have been both in Malcolm's position and tipped over into more of a softy. I have been in Tim's position as the one fiercefully calling out and making a stance. I have been having seizures because I saw all of this and felt helpless and didn't know how to regain faith in the existence. Malcolm's position in this is what always brought me back into functioning as a human being again, so I'm going with that. But that does not mean that there is something wrong about laying things bare that need to be laid bare, or with having strong feelings and making a stance when called for. It can all come together.
I agree with Malcolm that your subconscious is an excellent guide. You are intuitive. That can be very skillful means. You have the heart for it too. And the integrity and the guts. Yes, kudos to you!
edit: This was supposed to be a reply to T. Sorry!

You and Malcolm and Linda, in this particular instance, were all way ahead my curve, you were all able somehow to get from zero to 60 in almost no time, while i took, literally, hours.
The lessons in simple tag-team wrestling 101 are also fascinating to me here. Give Malcolm and me a little time and some learning curve, and we may work out a metta cop/bizarre-off-the-charts cop routine that will give glee to many, and the exact specific dose of a glimpse of the emperor's true ass to a highly select few, in certain specialized circumstances. Linda is woke on so many things, i just want to crawl along behind her reading her fortune cookie slips. And if you don't die of a heart attack or throat cancer in the next few days, T, i want to continue ordering whatever it is they are serving you at the Practice Practice Practice Cafe.

So, what's the code on this forum? Is there a written code? Or it is just that moderators decide? Just wondering.

Posts: 5578 Join Date: 1/26/13 Recent PostsThere are rules for posting appropriate and inappropriate content on the DhO that you can all read here: https://www.dharmaoverground.org/home
The Dharma Overground is a resource for the support of practices that actually lead to beneficial, fundamental mental, perceptual and emotional transformations. It is a place where everything related to the support of practice may flourish, including where to go on retreats, what techniques may lead to what, an in depth look at the maps of possible states and stages, discussions about how to determine what experience was what, and in general anything that has to do with actually practicing rather than what typically occurs in, for example, standard meditation circles and forums. Here you will find a robust and variable community of people with a wide range of experience levels, perspectives and interests, though all loosely bound by the same basic principles of empowering, helpful, engaged knowledge and exploration of the possibilities of the mind and how it may be modified to reduce suffering and enhance wisdom.
In general our basic principles and attitudes favor:
- pragmatism over dogmatism: what works is key, with works generally meaning the stages of insight, the stages of enlightenment, states of deep concentration, freedom from suffering in what ways are possible, the criteria for various attainments, actual discussion of one's experience and the results of practice, etc.
- diligent practice over blind faith: this place is about doing it and understanding for yourself rather than believing someone else and not testing those beliefs out
- openness regarding what the techniques may lead to and how these contrast or align with the traditional models
- personal responsibility: you take responsibility for the choices you make and what you say and claim
- a lack of taboos surrounding talking about attainments
- the assumption that the various aspects of meditative development can be mastered in this life
- the spirit of mutual, supportive adventurers on the path rather than rigid student-teacher relationships
- and the notion that the collective wisdom of a group of strong practitioners at various stages and from various traditions and backgrounds is often better than following one guru-type.
- Inclusion: Diversity is encouraged. If you are interested in the topics we emphasize here and in maintaining a culture conducive to supporting deep and open discussions of these things, then you are welcome here. Specifically, LGBTQIASetc., POC, white, women, men, trans, cis, other, etc. are welcome here. Please help maintain a culture of conversation that supports the deep practice of all people. May the teachings and practice of wisdom be open and available to all who seek them.
- No name-calling or ad hominem attacks
- No on-and-on repetitious, angry rants that marshal no supporting evidence, target an interlocutor, and have the effect of intimidating the interlocutor.
- No threats of violence, even if metaphorical or aimed at no one in particular
- No taunting, mocking, or intimidation of an individual or a group on the basis of race/ethnicity, sex, disability (including mental illness), sexual orientation, religious preference, or spiritual practice
- No speech acts that would be actionable under US criminal or civil tort law
- Don't post copyrighted material that you don't have the right or permission to post or distribute except snippets allowed under fair use.
The Moderators (contact info there) will warn and, as a second step ban posters who are absolutely not willing to respect these rules.
When in doubt, ask, "Is this helpful and conducive to clarity, wisdom, and the alleviation of suffering?"
