Just bumping this, also to request that no further posts on this subject be made on T's practice log.

Is your capacity for tolerance like in this video: https://youtu.be/wDYNVH0U3cs

What is moderator action, and how, specifically, is it requested? Is there a key word, like a safe word, that the moderator can use to locate the point specifically, by a search engine? Does the moderator generally have to wade through all this shit all the time, like a police car on routine patrol, or is a moderator request the radio-call type thing that makes him roll up his sleeves, take a deep sigh at karma being a bitch and dharma being a pain in the ass, drive to the requested location of the incident, and THEN wade through all the shit. Is it a single post request, a general tone, a black list?

I'm just asking for a friend.

love, tim

Okay, first of all, that is fucking great, and if i had any money, i would order the book. I feel capable of improving my capacity to be offended, and am inspired by this video to really move on toward becoming a fully really offendee.

But i'm still not clear what a moderator action is 1) triggered by, 2) does to address the call for action.  i mean, if public tirades alone are the trigger . . . But this request for moderator action is something specific, and by the book, so what i'm really asking about is what section of which book to consult on this particular protocol loop.

For my friend, I mean.

(edit, p.s.) i'm a bit slow, and mis-read this thread badly from the start. I thought this was about you guys tangling on Advaita and Buddhism. I had noticed the ugly exchange as i went through T's log this morning, but didn't specifically registering that it was the two of you going at it, just that it was a shame now  that T had to wade all that shit to see if someone had an insight into the fact that he was calmly noted sensations in his high chest and throat that had him wondering if he needed actual medical attention or what.

So fight it out here, Nicky. I would be offended if you didn't.

There is a function that allows you to flag a post. Then you can choose your reason for flagging it, such as hateful content. You can find it down in the left corner of each post. It doesn't always work, though, or maybe that's just a glitch in my touchpad or something. Anyway, it is a tiny flag symbol and the text "flag".

Oh, oh, on T's log. I misread-too-fast and assumed this was an "Advaita and Buddhism" thing. I didn't even notice who was going at it on T's log when i went through this morning, i just skipped all that shit and replied to his post. That was you and Nicky! Got it! Yeah, fight it out here, guys, really.

Also, I just realized that this is about an exchange on T's log, not Advaita and Buddhism. I hadn't realized that was Malcolm and Nicky going at it there this morning. So I'm glad curious took this step, actually. This seems a proper gutter for the fight.

Does the flag function go to the top of the moderator's in-box somehow? Is malcolm's request-underscoring thread here actually more to offer a more appropriate alternative arena? If so, skillful means, i say. Have at it, gentlemen.

That's how I understood it. That and making a public stance against antisemitic propaganda in order to make this a safer place. And taking on the fight to spare those who might be vulnerable to the damage. Hence the expression of love. Very skillful means indeed.

edited to add: AND managing to do this without losing compassion. That's a tough balance. That's the balance I was trying to deal with in my long-term tour of the dukkha nanas before getting on board with the daily practice.

Thanks Tim.  Respecting T is definitely a big part of it.  But actually, I don't really want to argue with Nicky about this at all (although it can be hard to resist emoticon).  Rather, I just want Nicky to commit to stopping spewing the hateful anti-semitic propaganga under the guise of 'innocent facts'.  Or to be banned.  I would prefer the former alternative, as I think Nicky has an huge amount to offer.  And I'm sure we could have some great good natured arguments about other matters.

But we know from history what happens if you tolerate the dog-whistling deniable hateful bullshit.  Eventually you lose everything.  Maybe even the dharma.

Also, it is actually hurting people here and now, on this forum.

EDIT:  And here is the latest example from Lars practice log:  Quoting Nicky:  "The Jewish religion, for example, teaches "God" or "Yahweh" is the 1st cause. The Buddha taught "ignorance" is the 1st cause. Therefore, most people are blinded by ignorance and can do hurtful actions. "

Nicky has no interest in the cravings of fools. The Buddha said:

The fool seeks undeserved reputation, precedence among monks, authority over monasteries, and honor among householders.

Let both laymen and monks think that it was done by me. In every work, great and small, let them follow me" — such is the ambition of the fool; thus his desire and pride increase.

I don't know the history here. I didn't register anti-semitism on my admittedly quick first pass through T's log, i was just skimming to see if anyone had said anything i considered constructive and helpful, so i wouldn't repeat in my reply to T. I do recall think it was sort of cool if T was Jewish, because my impression was that T is a "Tim," and the thought of a Jewish Timothy warmed my Catholic (a.k.a. sectarian Jewish) heart.

I take it pretty seriously that Malcolm is so riled up so fast. I know him well enough at this point to pay attention if he thinks something is important. I don't know you much at all, but it looks like the nama-rupa thread, which on my first pass through it struck me as way over my head technical and academic, might be my foot in the door.

The point is, this is the appropriate venue for this conversation at this point, and it should be rated NC-17 or whatever the DhO equivalent of x-rated is, to minimize toxic leakage and collateral damage to innocent bystanders mistaking it for a collegial discussion. This is the gutter appropriate to a gutter fight that seems to have some historical momentum and ripeness. I am interested myself. I only have one brown shirt, and it says "Tranter's Creek Campground, Washington, North Carolina" on it. If I am hanging out with Gestapo types here, as you suggest, it's just a matter of moments before i'll be off to the camps myself, so i have a dog in this hunt and skin in this game.

RE: Moderator Request

I'd agree with you Tim: I did not sense any direct anti-semitism either. But then, apparently there is some long history here, if Malcolm's words are to be believed. Further, I'm not Jewish, so I don't directly feel their sentiments either -- and I don't understand what might directly hurt them.

Let me give an example here, of what can be directly interpreted as racism when it is not: You guys know of the Trudeau blackface incident. And he was immediately branded as racist. He might well be. I have no idea -- and he apologized -- so let's assume that he did have racist intent (or who knows, he was just playing a political game). What I know is that some white person might blacken their face because they admire a black person too -- just to show admiration and appreciation. All I'm saying is, we should not judge without looking carefully.

All this said -- I don't know any of the history here -- all I'm doing in is putting in some words which I think might mean some thing here ...

An actual touch of real humor, and a pace of conversation we can sustain, really would go far here. I couldn't agree with the two of you more. His references are impeccably anti-semitic, and that's just for starters. Kick that fucker's hitler-loving ass out of here. He said good-bye, i hope he meant it. Next time, Malcolm, i've got your back from the moment the fucker reveals himself. I might have to go to the nama-rupa thread to see what the fuck he was doing with THAT. I thought the nama-rupa thread was just boring. That is why, when i really see a fight worth jumping into, I have started being a truly annoying as fuck person from the first recognized exchange, and asked that the other person use "reply-with-quote" in its entirely, in every post, to keep the full development of the conversation in one real akashic record spot throughout. Most people glaze out and skip the whole mess, and bless them. But people really paying attention will know immediately where there's that much smoke, that many boxes within boxes, two people going to that much trouble to keep their argument entire and on the most easily-examinable record possible at any point from beginning to end, the fire can be found, and even maybe who it's burning or warming, and who it's intended to burn or warm.

That's fine, I'll take the lead as hard cop then, when i realize shit like this is going on.

You played soft cop on ninthAI last night wonderfully, by the way, let us all go to bed, by allowing him to slip out of the whole "reply-with-quote" nested box sequence that, at its arduously maintain tiny little box heart at the infinitely receding center of the continued post had him insulting Linda in truly ugly and superior fashion. You came in on his slick restart, and totally let him off the hook by crediting his simple denial of something that no one on earth would ever have the patience to track down and actually examine whether it was true or not in context. We must do our best not to get sucked in by either hatefulness or nihilism from others.  But also we must do our best not to respond in the same way, instead cultivating love and compassion and inclusivness, and the hope of progress for all of us (for if others cannot progress, how can we?).  But that equally that doesn't mean we have to be a soft touch.

I understand and respect that need for the full context, because history is always reproduced in a selective way, and that can get very toxic. I think this forum is designed to keep records on everything that is published, even if edited or deleted. Still, only moderators can access that, and it's a heavy work load.

I think you were both great. And sometimes a cigar is not just a cigar.

When someone has backed into a corner, they need some space in order to get out from the corner. The great difficulty lies in giving them the space without taking it from those who are vulnerable to their "truth".

T, this is exactly the sort of stuff I experience as tensions in the heart and throat chakra. Dealing with the tough balance of spotting things like this intuitively and finding myself in the midst of something very painful that makes me afraid to open up.

I didn't see it because I didn't read any of those comments soon enough. I'm very grateful that Malcolm did.

I have been in your position, T, as the one who spots it intuitively and provokes it. I have been both in Malcolm's position and tipped over into more of a softy. I have been in Tim's position as the one fiercefully calling out and making a stance. I have been having seizures because I saw all of this and felt helpless and didn't know how to regain faith in the existence. Malcolm's position in this is what always brought me back into functioning as a human being again, so I'm going with that. But that does not mean that there is something wrong about laying things bare that need to be laid bare, or with having strong feelings and making a stance when called for. It can all come together.

I agree with Malcolm that your subconscious is an excellent guide. You are intuitive. That can be very skillful means. You have the heart for it too. And the integrity and the guts. Yes, kudos to you!

It's doing the real shit-slog work of tracking the breadcrumbs to the baker that is so rare, and understanding what the baker is up to, and whether it is good food or junk food or actual poison. You and Malcolm and Linda, in this particular instance, were all way ahead my curve, you were all able somehow to get from zero to 60 in almost no time, while i took, literally, hours.

The lessons in simple tag-team wrestling 101 are also fascinating to me here. Give Malcolm and me a little time and some learning curve, and we may work out a metta cop/bizarre-off-the-charts cop routine that will give glee to many, and the exact specific dose of a glimpse of the emperor's true ass to a highly select few, in certain specialized circumstances. Linda is woke on so many things, i just want to crawl along behind her reading her fortune cookie slips. And if you don't die of a heart attack or throat cancer in the next few days, T, i want to continue ordering whatever it is they are serving you at the Practice Practice Practice Cafe.

(This response is to the thread, not really to any particular person.) Eh, just to hopefully provide some balance, I'm personally a lot more worried about people who see Nazis everywhere than those who are supposedly saying "antisemitic" stuff. One comment from the other thread was (paraphrasing) "some people hypothesize that anxiety can be traced back to circumcision". If that's antisemitic, then the term antisemitic has no particular meaning that I can discern. You say you're seeing some kind of sinister pattern? Maybe, but apply the principle of charity. It might be wise to consider that the fortune cookie slips are part of what makes up the conditions for what will unfold. We are all sowing seeds. Skillful means is spotting the possible seed and the fertile ground and the opportunity and sowing that seed in that fertile ground* in a way that lets something good unfold - and choosing that chain instead of one that causes harm. We are in the now. Thus, nothing is written in stone. That's a weird fucking paradox in a dharma of non-agency, but I find that believing in a choice despite of the non-agency enables skillful means whereas not believing in it tends to lead to resignation.

Question for everyone, not just Tim, I've just responded to his post: Does this forum have a freedom of speech code of conduct?

Even Chomsky -- who, by all means -- would not be a fan of White Supremacists -- has no problem with White Supremacists saying what they want -- because free speech is OK. Of course, that does not mean that any action (including verbal action) is fine, but the point is free speech is OK.

So, what's the code on this forum? Is there a written code? Or it is just that moderators decide? Just wondering.

Freedom of speech does not mean that everyone has to listen to anything anywhere. And it certainly does not mean prohibiting people from saying no.

There is a written code that sets boundaries to what can be said here, basically for the protection of human rights.

No doubt Nicky has pushed certain people's buttons. If you have a strong reaction then you have 3 choices:

1) Call the police.

2) Engage with him on the facts.

3) Examine your feelings.

I don't see anyone doing much of 2 or 3.

Personally I take issue with his selective choice of certain facts and think there are strong counter-arguments. I also recognize that this topic raises strong pro-Jewish feelings in me due to certain conditioning.

I'm freezing this topic.

There are rules for posting appropriate and inappropriate content on the DhO that you can all read here:  https://www.dharmaoverground.org/home

The Dharma Overground is a resource for the support of practices that actually lead to beneficial, fundamental mental, perceptual and emotional transformations. It is a place where everything related to the support of practice may flourish, including where to go on retreats, what techniques may lead to what, an in depth look at the maps of possible states and stages, discussions about how to determine what experience was what, and in general anything that has to do with actually practicing rather than what typically occurs in, for example, standard meditation circles and forums. Here you will find a robust and variable community of people with a wide range of experience levels, perspectives and interests, though all loosely bound by the same basic principles of empowering, helpful, engaged knowledge and exploration of the possibilities of the mind and how it may be modified to reduce suffering and enhance wisdom.

In general our basic principles and attitudes favor:

  • pragmatism over dogmatism: what works is key, with works generally meaning the stages of insight, the stages of enlightenment, states of deep concentration, freedom from suffering in what ways are possible, the criteria for various attainments, actual discussion of one's experience and the results of practice, etc.
  • diligent practice over blind faith: this place is about doing it and understanding for yourself rather than believing someone else and not testing those beliefs out
  • openness regarding what the techniques may lead to and how these contrast or align with the traditional models
  • personal responsibility: you take responsibility for the choices you make and what you say and claim
  • a lack of taboos surrounding talking about attainments
  • the assumption that the various aspects of meditative development can be mastered in this life
  • the spirit of mutual, supportive adventurers on the path rather than rigid student-teacher relationships
  • and the notion that the collective wisdom of a group of strong practitioners at various stages and from various traditions and backgrounds is often better than following one guru-type.
  • Inclusion: Diversity is encouraged. There are lots of ways up the mountain, and many interesting skills and insights to develop using many traditions and paths. Make yourself at home. Discover the possibilities of how straightforward, down-to-Earth, and practical the Dharma can be. May all find something here that is of value and contribute to the wisdom represented and conveyed here.Note well: the culture of open disclosure of practice is rare and requires vigilance to maintain. You are welcome to participate here so long as you help maintain that space in which deep practice can be discussed.Standard netiquette, aka common courtesy: The forum works best when everybody posts from a place of mutual consideration and thoughtfulness towards others. Constructive criticism and critiques are highly encouraged, but should be done so in a calm, considerate manner. Avoid abrasiveness, derision, insults and mockery. The Core Rules of Netiquette are a good general guide as to how to help this place support deep practice, and the Moderators are empowered to help direct things towards this fine ideal. If you require a space to discuss deep topics that is more private, this could be discussed with Daniel Ingram. To help keep the place more inviting of participation by those who can benefit from helpful friends supporting friends in their practices and sharing the intimate and deep adventures that these explorations can produce, the following ground rules have been adopted:

  • No name-calling or ad hominem attacks
  • No on-and-on repetitious, angry rants that marshal no supporting evidence, target an interlocutor, and have the effect of intimidating the interlocutor.
  • No threats of violence, even if metaphorical or aimed at no one in particular
  • No taunting, mocking, or intimidation of an individual or a group on the basis of race/ethnicity, sex, disability (including mental illness), sexual orientation, religious preference, or spiritual practice
  • No speech acts that would be actionable under US criminal or civil tort law
  • Don't post copyrighted material that you don't have the right or permission to post or distribute except snippets allowed under fair use.

The Moderators (contact info there) will warn and, as a second step ban posters who are absolutely not willing to respect these rules.

When in doubt, ask, "Is this helpful and conducive to clarity, wisdom, and the alleviation of suffering?"
