You can count on me to add a little keyboard texture wherever you see fit! (And maybe some vocals as long as the lyrics are already written )
Also can do mixing/mastering stuff!

All great to have! Please tell you also have the arranging skills at least a bit as Im not that strong there. New ideas often need some chop'n'crop to spread the short idea riff into a longer version to open up space for vocal melody and other instrumental parts etc ... (I plan on us creating stuff a la Bohemian Rapsody )
BTW, just to make it Dhamma relevant; Buddha realised the Middle Way after hearing a musician tell its apprentice that if he tunes the string too much it will snap, and if tuned to slack it will not make sound This music stuff is sooooo importnat in Buddhisms you have no idea! "Lets get togther, right now, tra la la"

Cool, nice songs!
Count me in. Don't know how I can collaborate as I don't have gear, I write scores. Surely I could throw in ideas here and there

You sure can help about arrangement ideas once we show the first draft or even just hearing if we are cluttering too many instruments together creating mushed potatoes instead of fries

Here's one that me and Che started (mostly Che, I just added some keys). I was going to do some more arranging to it, but maybe someone like Pepe would be better for that?

Not sure what this one reminds me of... Reobservation maybe?

Sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't know much about how to do it, technically. Is there some kind of free software that actually works without weird delays if you want to add a layer to something? Dummy-friendly is a plus.
I have a Shure Beta 58A precision crafted vocal microphone (dynamic/supercardioid) and an Alesis multimix 4 USB (4-channel USB mixer) that have been collecting dust in my wardrobe for more than a decade. I don't even know of they are still compatible with anything. I sure hope that the microphone is, because it's amazing.
I also have a digital interview recorder that records singing pretty well in the bathtub, worst case scenario (huge wave files).
And I have a metronome.

Doesn't have to be recorded live - we just each add something then send the track back and forth and add on top of it. So you just need a way to pull in the scratch track and record your vocals on top of it. There are free DAWs out there (Reaper is one).
Usually easiest to start with a drum or rhythm track of some sort and add on top of that rather than metronome.

Right. Makes sense, if I can get it to work. When I tried this with a free version of audacity back in the days, there was an awful delay from the microphone. If I find a way to contribute, I'll probably need some very patient technical support.
Edit: Latency! That's the correct term.

Reaper DAW is for free (well kind of it is free but its nice to give them a few bucks in case you use the DAW alot and you benefit from it so to speak). Latency can always be an issue but if you plug your headphones into the audio interface /direct monitoring) then you will be fine recording vocals or anything over the already recorded tune.
So ya a bit of tech is needed but not much!

Reaper DAW is for free
I installed Reaper but couldn't get any sound to come out of it, so I uninstalled.
Cakewalk is free nowadays. This is what I did on Windows. I don't know about macOS and Linux.
1. Download BandLab Assistant from https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk
2. Run BandLab Assistant
3. Signup for a BandLab account
4. In BandLab, click the Apps tab, then click Install Cakewalk, and check the boxes for all the add-ons
5. Wait while downloads happen
6. Allow the installers to run for Cakewalk by BandLab, Studio Instruments Suite, Cakewalk Drum Replacer, and Cakewalk Theme Editor
7. Close BandLab Assistant, and open Cakewalk by BandLab
8. Open Demo Project, Sophia Jane, "Living for Now"
9. Click play button in transport controls
10. It works!

Just had a fun idea...
We trying to make lyrics, but hey! A lot of lyrics are already written about profound and awesome stuff in the logs here on DhO.
You, Polly, have this written in your 2nd log, and without editing anything it already suits a hip hop beat super cool. I'm kinda in love with this

Polly's practice log 2, about love:
It’s an emotion that carries you and that drives creation and makes it all worth while. It’s not static, but a flow. It’s the curiosity that makes you want to keep going, and a connecting force. As such, it is transcendental. It is also the faith that enables you to let go and the trust that allows you to throw yourself out and know that you will be carried.
I got the intuitive feeling that love is what holds all ”creation” together, not in a static way, but dynamically (as an ongoing exploration), and not by force but because it finds joy in it.

I would love to chime in!
I played classical piano for 8 years, but since last year I have tried to come up with some production stuff..
https://soundcloud.com/sstillrreal
I thought about a fun challenge that I would enjoy: Adding music to a recording of singing. I sing worse than.. mayonaise! So it would be fun to work with a recording of a nice singing voice

I know you can sing!!! I've heard you and its great! What I love about your vocal expression is that you dont give a shit if you can or cant sing you just do it! I love that honesty! Bob Dylan and Lennon did not have great vocals like Freddy Mercury did but hey man listen to those honest songs Right?
BTW, you asked and here it goes! You are in the machine now! Tim wrote these words and I know you can do some dirty broken vocals too but do as you feel of course! You try to sing it and find some beat and melody for it and then offer it to us to add more stuff to it! (in case you try and feel you just can sing it then I will try and helpout with my Freddy Mercury wanna-be vocals
Lets get into it! (btw, does not need to be a blues melody as Im not good at blues but we also can go blues and then we see where it gets us) EDIT; all song ideaas are open for tweaking and suggestions and re-doing. Just say so and we will get down to it!
'Darma Blues'
and I’m lost without a clue.
Yes, the path has turned all murky,
and I’m lost without a clue.
I’m just another turkey now, baby,
singing those Dharma blues.
There was a moment when I had it,
and the world seemed all made new:
one moment when I had it, baby,
and everything seemed new.
But it’s all the same old shit now
and I’m singing the Dharma blues.
I let it come and go now,
I let everything run through.
It all just comes and goes now,
and it all just runs right through.
But all that coming and going, baby,
it just seems like the Dharma blues.
They talk about nirvana.
They say it’s the end of what you do.
Yeah, samsara is nirvana, baby,
and there’s nothing else to do.
But all I know of nirvana, baby,
is just more Dharma blues.
Oh the Buddhadharma’s perfect,
yes, and every word is true.
I say that Buddhadharma’s perfect,
oh and every word is true.
But all those perfect sutras, baby,

Emil! Tell me if this riff is of any interest for that Dhamma Blues song! Try to sing on it and see what the feel is. I certainly can work more on it. Or we can keep it for another project.

Shargrol, Of course :
Meditation is much closer to playing a guitar.
Meditation is a very esoteric practice: mind looking at mind to figure out what mind is. Self-investigating self to figure out what self is. It's pretty crazy when you think about it. It's much closer to playing an instrument. You can talk about it and describe how to play a guitar, but that will never allow you to play a guitar. It's all time spend training the body and guitar mechanics, developing the ear, developing a sense of rhythm/time, learning how to bend strings to the right pitch --- on and on and on. No one can say "just do this". You basically have to be like Slash or Hendrix and walk around all the time playing on and playing with your guitar...

Hey Dhamma brotha, I like this riff for sure!
I'm thinking it's very rock-y actually. Like, I can hear this riff as something that keeps on going through out the song, but it needs drums with a sharp snare, distorted guitar chords. Freestyle soloing over this is also in my mind right away, love to do that too lol. As for vocals.. ugh! I have ideas but can't do it I think :p

Hey emil, i think you and Papa Che, and anybody else coming in on instrumental tracks, and riffs, are going to have most of the fun here.
As for vocals.. ugh! I have ideas but can't do it I think :p
this is where i'm trying to get my toe in the water. What are your ideas, for getting lyrics integrated? I'm treading water in the ocean of language here, and would be happy to try to work with elaborating any vocal/lyric seeds you have. Papa Che was wondering about wedding "Dharma Blues" to his riff, i think, but really, we're wide open here on the word shit, and still feeling out collaborative ways and means. So any thoughts from you on Music and Words would be most welcome. In the past, I've just basically thrown shit at Papa Che's wall and we would see what stuck, and he would put together the shit that stuck with music somehow. So maybe I just need a wall to throw shit at. But I'd like to try to throw shit that at least has a chance of being suitable.

I've got two verses of a fresh thing, still groping around for a chorus and another verse or two. I'll fling it at the wall soon, probably tomorrow.
Also, if you have themes or scraps of lyrics, I can riff off of those, so please throw words into the mix at any point. I know you write stuff, from listening to your soundcloud. Basically, I'm just a language accident waiting to happen.
my email is tim_farrington@msn.com; che and I have used email for lyrics fine-tuning, etc., to avoid clogging up this thread with rough drafts and misfires on my part, lol.

Haha, yes! Im glad you like it! I realized singing wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. I personally love that screaming shit so I was pleasantly surprised that I could basically edit it to sound like I can scream which I in no way can. Gotta love that crazy music software.
But alright!! I'll catch up to you on email and we can ping pong lyrics there

I have been fighting with mixing this Bar of Last Resort song all day and I still think its not mixed that well but I can play the guitar part once more to get it tighter I guess.
Emil, you can use this mix now to see if you can come up with some keyboard melody under the vocals especially as vocals really could benefit from extra support. Also see if you can get something to accompany the guitar riffs. Make sure to record your keyboard separatelly so I can add it to the mix later on.
BTW, I would like everyone to tell me if anything sounds off in this mix! Thank you!

PCD:Don't worry my man, my style is defo not heavy as well. The thing is, I don't decide what the music wants to do This time it wanted to go heavier I guess.
In any case, I've already forgotten all about this song and on to the next edit
Maybe I'll have a look at your recording tomorrow. I like it. The guitar is beautiful and you've put it together nicely. Some nice details with sound effects as well.
J W:
I like this murder2ndonly song I think all it needs is vocals! I'm imagining a back-and-forth between solo and choir. Maybe I'll have a look at that as well
If its to be this way I will not be able to join this song as this playing is not my style at all. But maybe someone else will join in who is into such a genre of playing. Thats all good

I have been fighting with mixing this Bar of Last Resort song all day and I still think its not mixed that well but I can play the guitar part once more to get it tighter I guess.

Im glad its not going heavy metal but of course if most folks feel to go that way Im totally ok with that
I have been fighting with this Bar song and here is the best mix I came up so far. I think its now well balanced EQ-wise and I found the Bass to be off beat so I moved it a bit and all fits well now
Here is the 3rd edit;
(NOTE! I can upload the version without my main guitar riff so to give you more room to express the keybaord part. Please tell if you prefer that, as Im sure we can later match all in the mix and keep some remove some parts, even my guitar parts if they are in the way of some fine keyboarding )

RE: DhO Collab Band - join us!
Posts: 2464 Join Date: 6/13/11 Recent Postsin line with my state of the art conception of my role here, I am flinging word shit at the walls to see if any sticks long enough to accrue some music.
so here's this:
“From Where I Sit”
Some say they they sit in bliss here
and some say it’s all a dream.
Some sit and say they see it clear
and it all moves like a stream.
But from the place where I am sitting,
I can hear the planet scream.
Some say that they’re awake now
and it all just shines like foil.
They’ve gone beyond the faking now
and they’ve gone beyond the toil.
But from the place where I am sitting
I can hear the oceans boil.
[chorus:]
And everyone’s born dying
and everything must cease,
Despite the voices crying
for something like release.
So let’s pray that the place we’re sitting
may be a place of peace.
Some say it’s all just perfect,
and it’s all in your attitude.
It’s all in the way you see it
and eating organic food.
But you know the rich keep getting richer,
and the poor keep getting screwed.
chorus
Some say that there is justice
in a way that’s clean and neat.
God’s will, the law, or karma,
and the moral loop’s complete.
but from the place where I am sitting,
they’re still dying in the streets.
chorus

Nice one Tim Love it! Is this for the Dhamma Blues song or new one? If not for the Blues song then I would suggest getting rid of the "baby" word if you don't mind that is. But if it's for the Dhamma Blues song we keep it as it just fits that genre well.

"Momma"? "Honey"? i write all my songs for "baby," papa che! but it was just a syllabic place-holder, essentially, for the beat i'm hearing in my mind. So it's bye-bye "baby." I did an edit, on the song as posted, so check it out again above and see if it still works without my baby sweetheart, lol.
love you, baby!

Like the lyrics, Tim!
For me, those lyrics are for a rap. Hehe..
In which case we'll have to fling a few more "baby"s around :p

Hahaha, I made some music for those lyrics posted above. Sing along kids.
I think the next thing for me to do is to take some of your recordings and play with that, create some new tune with your stuff rather than just mine. This was just a fun little early-in-the-day-play-around for my own sake
and I’m lost without a clue.
Yes, the path has turned all murky,
and I’m lost without a clue.
I’m just another turkey now, baby,
singing those Dharma blues.
There was a moment when I had it,
and the world seemed all made new:
one moment when I had it, baby,
and everything seemed new.
But it’s all the same old shit now
and I’m singing the Dharma blues.
I let it come and go now,
I let everything run through.
It all just comes and goes now,
and it all just runs right through.
But all that coming and going, baby,
it just seems like the Dharma blues.
They talk about nirvana.
They say it’s the end of what you do.
Yeah, samsara is nirvana, baby,
and there’s nothing else to do.
But all I know of nirvana, baby,
is just more Dharma blues.

Oh you went all heavy metal on this one I see not my cup of tea but Tim likes it so all good.
As Im hypersensitive in hearing I could not really get into the vocals as they sound very muddy (EQ-ed too dark maybe) into my speakers and headphones.
I will give a few suggetsions for "Collaborating". It is paramount to leave other instrument parts empty. In this case the guitar part is already there and suggested, and is kind of already in my mind If its to be this way I will not be able to join this song as this playing is not my style at all. But maybe someone else will join in who is into such a genre of playing. Thats all good
I do love the instrumental start of this song but once heavy metal style guitar came in and the rest of screamy metal vocals I kind of backed off. But that is just me and as I say there might be those who are into this and can offer their guitar chops. Or you can simply do this song together with Tim.
I know from the past collabs that finding the middle way between all members involed can be a bit tricky as tastes can vary from person to person. This is not to be an issue as we can all simply decide which collab to join and which not. Its different if we are in the same band though the very reason my danish band could not get passed 3 months together
However LOVE the way you jumped at once onto this project ! Im the same, I dont wait too long nor do I like having people wait for me. Good man Emil!

Ok, here it is... I went full 80s Giorgio Moroder with it, hope that's ok, LOL.

Added a little bit of melody in there but thinking we can take more time with that part, maybe somebody else has a melody?
It definitely needs some guitar - looking at you, Che

Yes!!! Now I can feel me Mojo bubbling through my veins Tim Fucking F I have a wicked idea for lyrics! 'Old age, Sickness and Death' Something mellow, in a way "you can do whatever but these 3 breath down your neck, these are your shadow, one you can not shake off, no matter in which heavenly throne you sit these will knock you down etc ...
basically ... at the end you loose ... well, you have lost the very moment you've got born. Yeah, something like that, to cheers us up

Ok folks! Here is the most important part! The lyrics! Just got this from Tim and its a first take meaning its open to tweaking and suggestions! I would invite JW to sing it and even Linda to do some backing vocals or esle or the other way around or as you two feel at the moment but do put a chop chop on decision making as we need to roll this first project to fruition so to keep this train roolling Bring in the suggestions and JW I hope you can expand the drum and bass and piano parts as well as your own so we can accomodate the lyrics and also give more space for the guitar and maybe otehr instruments! What say ya?!
EDIT; just to say I think I found a nice way to play the guitar part. Its chordal and non-aggressive and fits well with the rest so we will need a part that pokes out as a strong riff part inbetween the singing. This can also be played on piano or keys of course! I am on my own at home from Monday so will have silence to mike and record through my amps! Cant do it before sorry (my little son is just way too loud)
“Old Age, Sickness, and Death, Oh My!”
Walking down the road, can’t help but see
the same old three
making casualties.
Chorus;
Old age, sickness, and death
you can dodge and dance
go into a trance
but every breath
is one step deeper, friend,
into what you were born to know as end.
Old age, sickness, and death.
Breathing down your neck
always the same old wreck
at the end of the trek.
like this shadow stalking you
sticking close, whatever you do
from the start until the journey’s through
Can’t shake them
can’t break them
can’t make them go away
kicking over every throne
leaving you wasted and alone
emptied into bones
you can trust them though
wherever you may go
there are the three you’ll always know

Cool lyrics, Thanks Tim & Che! Good stuff, and on topic.
I can try some singing but it will take me a while... I can whip up keyboard parts real quick but takes me a long time to get vocals right. And I also won't be able to start until next week some time.
If Emil/Linda/anyone else wants to take a shot at it, go right ahead! We can always do group vocals or have different people singing different verses. Getting the melody and rhythm of the vocals down is half of the work, anyway.

Yes, the vocal melody and space for it is most important now. If you can arrange that part we can see who can do the first vocal try. I don't mind giving it a go and then someone else sings it and we choose which serves the song best. No ego selfishness in DhO Band We all serve the song. Metta to all songs of the universe, above, below and all around

I can't read music mate in no shape or form all ear over here! Even you mentioning what chords you played is of not much use. Sure it helps with knowing the Key it starts in, but finding all other chord shapes all over fretboard is all ears. Usually brings about "mistakes" which might work great

Here is a quick and dirty take so please ignore the sloppy playing I might be even playing wrong chords in certain parts
If we are to do it this way I will need to practice this some more as arpeggiating is not my forte also the chuking style at the end should be without delay.

Heyyy, cool! I like the idea, yeah maybe a couple of notes off here and there but I think if it's mixed in properly it will sit nice, it's a little bit in front right now.
Send me the solo guitar part when you're happy with it and I can mix it in!
Emil:
I can't open the Dharma Blues file for some reason... can you send a Soundcloud or Dropbox link for that?
If you want to add vocals to anything including murder2ndonly, go for it! I'm not 'attached'...
I was hoping to have had some time to work on some vocals by now, but it looks like it's not going to be until after the holidays. Haven't had much down time over here, unfortunately...

Hey J W, sorry to take so long.
Here's a link to the song, I put it up on google drive.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gPAeuI-zZEVWzMKLpvLocFGKha1tfZzi/view?usp=sharing
I have been meaning to look at some more Dharma music hehe. But I have been caught in some basics, trying to learn some new software/editing skills and stuff. I'll come back stronger

Emil have you tried to play over the Bar of Last Resort song? It certainly needs reinforcment with keyboards under the vocals but also in the main guitar riff part and maybe in the intro of the song as well. Give it a listen and see if the song is inspiring you.
JW I think Ive got a new riff idea from that original piano part which I think to roll on with instead if ok with you all. Its still in the same ball park. Will see how to record it as miking my amp is not possible when family is home (need to get myself a muli fx unit with amp sims again)

Hahah, love it!!
I personally don't mind the heavy metal-ness of it, it does kind of fit with the lyrics, which seem to me very much Dissolution/Desire for Deliverance inspired.
It's all for fun anyway, and speaking of fun - the Dark Night is getting so much attention here, A&P deserves a song as well!
Che -
Take your time with it and upload it whenever you are ready my friend!
I'm hoping to get some ideas out this week...

JW I've managed to record this video demoing my new take on the DhO piano idea which I like btw, I just added my personal groove to it as in its original form I could not get my head around it I'm an amateur for crying out loud I must simplify it a bit in accordance to be part of it
Tell me all what you think? Usable. Bin it! ?

It sounds good to me my man - if you can just record it in line with the original tracks that way I can sync it up! Looking forward to it!

I dont think it fits the original chords! This will need to be recorded with my drums as a guideline and then maybe we can do other instruments using my take? Maybe?
I will try and find time to record it and then we can see where this brings us

crashing the party . . . I love this, guys, and the way it's developing. I can actually hear a structure with this one, a space for lyrics, and since JW is sick of the fucking dukkha nanas and wants some A & P, see if you can hear this with the music--- as always, shit flung at a wall, usable/bin it, as papa che says.
“The Arising and the Passing Away”
A light across the sky
a flicker in the eye
don’t know how or why
but it sent me, it sent me, far away
A fire in the heart
flames piercing like a dart
just a place to start
but it sent me, it sent me, on my way
A grinding of the gears
a road beyond the fears
a path that disappears
but it keeps me, it keeps me, on my way
a light that needs no sky
a self without an “I”
this death beyond the dying
and it calls me, it draws me, home again.

I like these lyrics! And yeah I'm down to give singing it a shot.
Che - only thing is then we would have to re-do all the other parts
Much easier to just overlay the guitar parts rather than the other way around...

We can also opt to do it without the guitar part as its already sounding good for the vocals to soar over. Once you lay the vocals down make sure to open some sections before and after the vocals for some guitar riff/arpegio noodle. How does that sound? I think guitar as is would only fight with the vocals too much as keyboards and piano are taking lots of EQ space already.

And yes - we don't have to have guitar on it. Or maybe just a quick little guitar solo section? Whatever you are feeling.
Seems like we've got plenty of other ideas floating around out there so I'm happy with just moving to the next thing ... we can always circle back later.

Wow, JW, haunting and full of a beautiful aspiration. I love your voice, pure and clean. This ends up being a "practice" song, maybe, a song for the long haul with its initiating touch of A & P, but that's my bias anyway, lol. I really love this, what a delight. But yeah, more space for instrumental elaboration, room for the guitar and keyboards to romp, would be wonderful.

Ha! I can hear Jimmy Somerville here nice! The vocals need here and there a bit of juice in the performance but generally this vibe works for your vocals for sure. I would appreciate less heavy reverb on your vocals so I can hear the words. I think these lyrics are too good not to be heard. Also dont be afraid to pull vocals to the front with more volume and push back the instruments a bit. You can also pan the instruemnts to the sides give them a bit more reverb so to place them in the background and bring your vocal to front.
Of course these are mastering issues but felt to share my views now
Can we try and make an "intermezzo" section inbetween the vocal parts, to give the listener a breather, like a musical pause of sorts before vocals get back in again on the 2nd or rd verse? We sure need to speard the song to be at least 3,5-4 minutes long to let it speard its wings a bit.
Maybe a section where keybaord holds drone notes so guitar part could noodle a bit. I will noodle a bit more before I record it.
I think we should stick with one song if at all possible so to not loose focus and try and finsih it instead of starting too many at the same time. Thats just me of course We can do as people feel like also. I can adapt to the situation.
Well done on this one!

This does seem like a good song to really dig in on and try to finish it properly, since we all have irons in the same fire here. And the song's structure lends itself beautifully to stretching it out and making room; that's why I could hear verses in it in the first place, the basic breaks and recursiveness are the perfect base. Just leaving an empty round between verses would go a long way, the bass/rhythm beat there and room for instrumental riffs. Papa Che already has the one killer guitar riff on (3) Idea for a song ‘DhO’ - YouTube . It's in the hands of you musicians now, Papa Che and JW and anyone else who wants to lay in a track (bass guitar, anyone?). Also, I noted that JW picked out one verse to repeat, almost chorus-like in its function, so another possiblity is re-use that semi-chorus as an actual chorus, possibly with a slightly different sound, if that makes any sense. And maybe one double or triple extra length jam interval before the last verse(s), and room to jam out. Like I say, it's in y'all's hands now, all I can do is not send any more lyrics, at this point, so my job is easy. Loving this, truly.

Agreed on both the performance and mastering issues - this was the quick 'n' dirty.
I like the idea of extending the song out and having a break section, maybe even take the drums out completely for a while? I'm down to keep working on this one and get it somewhere everyone's happy with

Nice Collaborating can mean giving more space to others and even removing ones own parts to serve the spirit of collaboration. It's not always easy I'm very peculiar when it comes to EQ-ing and mastering. Being hyper sensitive I just hear certain details that most folks I worked with wouldn't hear. Let's hope I don't get too pushy here but I will give suggestion for sure

Hey friends,
My apologies for the delay... hope everyone is having a good new year.
Spent some time on that new section, I added a little flute solo thingy but that could be taken out. (we can try something else like a guitar section) I tried a few things with the drums to sort of add in those dynamics we talked about. And did another pass at the vocals.
https://soundcloud.com/clendn2000/dho2-take2
Che - if you want to try out some guitar that'd be cool, or if you want to take on a producer role here I'm open to suggestions on the vocals and on the structure. (Nice Tele by the way!! I love that color.)
My main thoughts are that it runs a little bit long, I could see just one bridge section and then a final chorus. I could see it going either way tho.
Lemme know what y'all think!

Nice work! I like it! Are we missing more lyrics or is this enough? Without a strong instrumental there is no need for it to be so long, I agree.
I will try and wrap my head around it but as it looks this will be a bit out of my zone but will try my best otherwise we do it without the guitar part as its already full as is. Could you make it Downloadable please thank you!

Oops- it should be downloadable now.
Ok that makes sense to me! We could maybe repeat some of the lyrics at the end or have Tim write another verse or 2?
If no guitar on this one, cook me up something else Che, I want to hear that new Tele!

I will try and let this one sink into me a bit before I give up. I tried a bit of funky chuking but didnt really do it for me. I even need to get my head around these chords as you piano/keybaord folks approach chording a bit differently than we guitards do It sure is out of my usual in the key of E stuff
Will try and find a day next week as my boy should go back to kndergarden again which gives me a bit free time during days.

I tried to record last night for the Arising and Passing Away song but just could not find anything sounding right. I think the song is already full as is and you can just make it shorter and expandmaybe on that flute part and call it quits. I think it sounds great!

Yo Tim me man! Have you forgotten about the 'Dhamma Badass' lyrics I think I have a few riffs which might be good for that one ... Emil would like it to be more heavy music and I do have a riff that never found home called 'Samsara' funny enough ... of to find it.
I think it's in a strange time signature of 13/7 of something like that! Will need all help to get some bass and drums going and of course a keyboard melody.
Where did I put ? ... (looking for that Samsara riff ) ...

Here is the riff Emil/Tim !!! (JW join us but I wish we give Emil the freedom to decide how the hip hop vocal part is to sound).
My guitar part would be an intro and outro as well as part between singing. We would need a vocal melody for this I think.
Tell me what you think folks! Btw, we can not use the bass and keyboard part as it belongs to my ex bass player.

Okay, guys, here a run, first draft, at "Dharma Badass" (Sanskrit version):
Well, you know that I am burning
and my soul has turned to flame.
Got a transcendental yearning
and nothing is the same.
I’m way beyond returning
and I’m done with all the games.
I’m just a dharma badass now
I’ve forgotten my own name.
They offered me a mansion
in a place that’s safe from dread.
They offered me a condo
in the city of the dead.
They offered me a kitchen
where I’d always be well-fed.
But I’m a dharma badass,
got no place to lay my head.
They told me to be prudent
and to play it by the rules.
They taught me to be careful
and how to suffer fools.
They taught me go along to get along,
I learned it in the schools.
But I’m a dharma badass
I ain’t nobody’s tool.
They can say that I went crazy,
they can say I lost my mind,
they can say I ran off searching
for something you can’t find.
They can say I stumbled in the ditch,
that I got left behind.
But I’m a dharma badass,
I don’t pay that shit no mind.
And there’s nothing left but fire
and living with the flame,
and my only desire
is to walk the eightfold way.
While they’re saving to retire,
I’ll go bankrupt every day.
I’m just a dharma badass,
and it’s gonna be okay.

Yes! Awesome track.
Man, you're really good, Mr. PCD, throwing beats down like 1, 2, 3! It's for real, but almost like fantasy. Listen to my rhymes and feel the ecstacy!
TIM! You're a lyrical genious, a Dhamned baddass!
Hey y'all don't wait for me. Throw yourselves at this beast like you were some dhamma n00bs seeing a rapture for the first time. Slay this figurative dhamma pus like its for free.
I think I may have to finish something I'm working on right now before I can clear my mind to submerge myself into Dhamma Badass.
But hey, when we first talked about it, I started writing lyrics too. Fuck those ofc, just putting them in here for reference:
Enlightened Baddass:
my meditation is half assed
I don't understand half as
much as the other kids on the Dhamma Overground web page
But I don't gi ve a fuck
Equanimity's my bitch, I don't give a shit!
I'll have another sit don't care if I have an itch
Can I please have a sip of your ayahuasca drink?
Think, when was the last time you saw someone like me?
A music making physics civil engineer with equanimity?
And yes, I bake a mean cake too,
Did you think that stare into the abyss was all I knew how to do?
Enlightened badass, what did you think it meant?
Did you think my ass was glued to the cushion with cement?
Fuck that shit, I fuck a mean bitch too, my girlfriends an instagram model with some sick tattoos
Fuck playin Kazoo, I threw that shit in the trash and then I went to the zoo
Smoked some chew and talked to a panda chewing bamboo
There's nothing to do, so I might as well shoot up some beats now listen to this poo!
(Sick buildup now develops from quiet
I'm thinking dramatic drums and some evolving bass)
(Heavy guitar riff playing with the next four lines)
- My Dhamma Sword was forged in the fires of no-bullshit.
- My mind was destroyed in another dimension
- I marched the dark night and now I don't give a shit!
- And now I'm just an Enlightened Motherfuckeeeeerrr!!!!
YEEAAHHHH!
(Again with way heavier guitar, rage against the machine like)

Ok then we get green light from Emil to do it our way while he finishes some other projects
JW my man talk to me! I see my riff starting as an intro already but maybe you think we could slide into the song with some longer notes, or shorter repetitive organ sound and then I kick it with my riff.
You know like some held chord and you go from no volume to increasing it more and more and when up in volume it stops and my riff kicks in with keyboard/organ/Hammond/what know I, part accompanying it.
In my head this riff sounds shorter. It's my bass player who made the first part sound so long.
I would prefer to play the first part of the riff 2 times and 2nd part once then first part 2 times again then singing a verse or two with another vocal melody (could be keyboards) then I kick in again.
Again I think this riff should do its part outside of the vocals unless we can sing some chorus style words in a long word fashion over this busy riff (Led Zeppeling style).
Dunno just brain storming. Hit me with ideas bro!

Thanks for taking me into consideration like that
Here's the project I was working on, pretty much all day! Simple lyrics, inspired by how I felt after meditation this morning hah
https://soundcloud.com/sstillrreal/we-grow-old
I think adding organ to your riff, Che, is something I can do. Perhaps tomorrow. No promises.
Btw, do you hate what I did on your Bar of last resort since you didn't get back to me? :p I sent it to you via email some days ago. Anyway, would be nice to know what you think of that just for reference as I think something could be similar over this new riff

Oh no I thought you said you will work on something else , my bad sorry!
I was hoping you will take over this Dharma Badass song as it started in your log and then me and Tim kind of joined! So what say you? You like that riff idea and Tim's lyrics? I have posted the link to the guitar part so we can start building a demo structure with it (check the last link above) Can you do drums in your DAW? Would be good to try and lay down some interesting 13/7 time sig drumming. I dont know how to do this shit and we are missing a damn Bass player!!! Anyone??? No? Dont be shy you bass player thats been lurking around DhO for eons we don't bite (that hard)
I have not seen the Bar of Last Resort! I check my email daily for that very reason and Im not seeing it Could it be in my spam?? Im off to check! Is it on your Soundcloud? Off to check now!!!!!

Ive just heard it and Im still pinching myself to see if this is real! I LOVE IT and Im not saying this lightly as Im known to be a pain in the ars when it comes to details in a song if they sound off. Well, mein freund Emil you fucking nailed it with this and Im looking forward to us doing some more stuff together (I just hope you can tolerate my sorry amateur ars)!
Wow! I just played it to my partner and she sais "now it sounds like a complete song and even your vocals sound good suddenly" Ha! Exactly my point! My sorry vocal DO sound better with your keyboard parts!
I do have one thing to say about the 1.39min part , I love it, sounds great but it stop abruptly and kind of doesnt feel right. Maybe let that last note of yours fade out, ring out ... maybe Thats the only fault I can find. For a demo its perfect!!!
Boy oh boy did this one exceed my expectations so effing well done Emil! And I mean it! If you could maybe look att that 1.54 minute mark again and maybe get that note ring out I would love to upload it on my DhO Band Soundcloud so to show it to these folks here YEEEESSSS!
Thank you Emil

Hehe, Papa, thanks for this! I think you may be exaggerating a bit, but as long as you like it, all is good!
Do whatever you want with it, lets upload it and see what the others think.
Although if I recall correctly, I think I did have some things I wasn't completely satisfied with myself. Perhaps an hour or two of editing will come later on..if needed.

Most certainly NOT exaggerating my friend
Sure thing, one can go on forever tweaking and perfecting but man I love even the parts where you might think to be slightly off with your keyboard because they sound so organic, as if we were sitting next to each other in a studio and recording live and just jammin.
Yes, if you want you can edit your keyboard a bit and maybe send the keyboard as a separate file to me. I would like to cut down some mid frequency on my guitar because your keyboard lives there. Your keyboard does get over some parts of my playing as well as the vocal and could go down in volume in general. But my guitar must be EQed better as now we have keyboard in playing an essential part.
So do your tweaks then send me the keyboard only for me to get my guitar into another frequency zone, so they are not fighting for EQ space.
Please make sure you send the keyboard part so it aligns perfectly with the start of the song as I'm bad at aligning parts
Thank you Emil!

Or maybe a pure drums intro? Dunno. Lots of ways to go about this one! Its a mystery Lets see what you, Emil and I can come up with. I certainly am not good at song aranging. I just pretend to be of use, kind of, look busy while the boss is watching
We present ideas and then we see what and how to go about it I guess. Lets rip it up gents (and ladies if any ... looking ... not seeing any ... still looking ... only Tim under the table there milking Llamas, or are those Camels? ... )

I've found my original riff idea This is how I play this in my head but my ex bassist wanted to make a longer version which Im not a fan of.
Dowload this one and play with it a bit and if possible create some new drums and a bit longer version so I can play to it and record it properly (with delay, must as it helps me play this fast riff). This is the link/version we work with please, thank you! BTW, I dont think I have the guitar as a separate file so try and use this to work out the 13/7 drums (or os it 13/8 ... Im really a dummy when it comes to dhamma and music theory)!

I've found the guitar only version you can use in the buidling of the demo and I can always record it again later once we have the main arrangement done. As you can hear the drum loop was bleeding into this mix so you can use it to help you out with finding this 13/7 time sig and with those new drums these will not be heard anyway.

There are two parts of the riff and each will need its own drum pattern otherwise it will not work and it is 13/7 I checked with my mate who worked on it before.
I cant help with drums as I have no clue how to do it nor how to count the beats. Maybe JW and Emil can do it?

Emil can do anything
... or actually I've never worked with 13/7 signature before. I think its witch craft.
Sounds cool tho But I don't think I'll get to look at this one any time soon. I have other things higher on my list, for example the Bar of Last resort, which I thought I would get to today, but didn't.

I'm trying out some out of faze fuzzy tones for the Dharma Badass riff. Can you keyboarders tell me how this gels with the keyboard EQ when playing over it? Good? No good? As it's all about how it sounds in the mix! Thank you

I think you missed my post above
That bass and those drums were by my ex bass player. We can not use it and I do not have them.
I do have the guitar only version with drums bleeding into the mic. This we can use to build up this strange time sig. I hope you or Emil have knowledge to do it. We will need a bass player as I'm not sure I can play this on bass.
If you can't find that last guitar only version here in the thread go to my SoundCloud and it's the last thing I've uploaded I'm sure.
The recording ain't the best but the time sig is correct and can be used to create an arrangement. Once we have this new arrangement then I can record new take over it.
Can your DAW create bass parts in case we don't find a bass player here on DhO?
Btw, my riff doesn't need to fit the vocal melody of the Dharma Badass lyrics (Tim posted the lyrics in this thread)
I guess we need to recap on this Dharma Badass song. I think Emil would like to sing it hip-hop if I'm not mistaken?
Yes let's come up with ideas!

Thank you Derek
Yes that 13/8 seems to fit the first part of this riff. The second part of the riff is different time sig. we need to figure that one out as well. But I understand this riff can be a headache.
Maybe we should try a different riff if this one is troublesome? I'm ok with that!

Ah, I did miss your post, sorry about that.
So I don't have a drumset or bass, and because of the odd time signature it's gonna be hard for me to match it with virtual drums...
I love the riff tho, if we can find a way to get some drums on there I am down to work on it!
(Are you a Tool fan by the way?)
I heard Derek's version which mostly works though the drums get off in a few sections
(I think because it actually is alternating between 13/8 and 7/8 or something crazy like that)
Or we can work on something else, whatever you prefer.

Hey guys, in the last soundcloud link, here's another way to think about this : what I'm hearing feels closer to four bars of 3/8 followed by one bar in 2/8, or three bars of 3/8 followed by a 5/8 like - ONE two three ONE two three One two three (ONE two three ONE two) or (ONE two three four five). Sometimes the last bar is closer to 1/8 or 4/8. There are some rythmic problems with the guitar which gets messy at certain points though.
I like the feel of this rythm : that shorter or longer time signature added in between, the contrast between the very straight eigth notes and regular pulse and this irregularity - all cool. But it would benefit from being clarified.
I would suggest, if I may, to rework the original riff to be more measured/regular, and not the other way around. Doing it that way can sometimes be interesting - or lead to endless confusion...
Decide what the time signature is, feel the tempo and then fit your ideas in that - it will magnify them.

Yes, another musician appears!! hah
(Feel free to hop in at any time)
That actually helps a lot, makes much more sense to me now.
I personally don't mind the alternating signatures, it just introduces some technical limitation from my side... whereas if it's set up in a single signature that's much easier to work into a virtual drumset of some kind.

It does help to get technical sometimes, to quote from Bill Evans : "Intuition has to lead knowledge, but it can't be out there on its own. If it's out there on its own, it's gonna flounder sooner or later." A tricky balance... Not unlike meditation ! :p
One possibility for this kind of thing, is to not get stuck by the grid/time signature/quantization function in your DAW, and just go by ear. The drum is a loop anyways, isn't it ?
The different parts in this last soundcloud bit can all work, some bits just have to be understood and reworked slightly, layer by layer, to fit the irregular time signatures. The devil is in the details When we introduce a regular tempo and measure, it has to be really clean because otherwise it can be really noticeable - and this is the kind of stuff you tend to forget, the more you listen to your thing, and it becomes impossible to figure out what the problem is because you just start liking the thing as is ; been there, done that...

Forget about it
but I love you joining us!!!
This riff is trying to find home since July 2018. If this song is not it's home so be it. Time will come in this ir the next life but this riff in its original form will find its home song!
However my ex bass player took 10 minutes to figure out the drums in his DAW. And so did my collab friend in UK it's possible if one knows how to count and one knows the DAW. I suck at all hence asking folks to do it for me.
Im right now asking my UK mate to fix me the drums ! Stay tuned will be back ! ... ....

You are talking about those glitches in formations again aren't ya!
BTW, my mate could't find time to do it again but found this one we worked on and it fits the entire riff except when there is turn around at the end of the 2nd part of the rif when it returns to the 1st part again (I hope this makes sense) So we only need to give a bit more space for the end of that 2nd riff. Any way, I hope this can help!

JW, Emil, Olivier, Derek here are the click track and the guitar part played simpler so lets see if we can make this work

Please note! You are allowed to chop and crop my riff if its needed to make the first part of riff go longer and the 2nd part shorter etc ... As long this riff is recognisable Im fine with alterations
I think any way this last riff I posetd was not exactly played towards the end, as we were trying to hunt down a beat that was easier to get n the click machine.
Tell me if this last take makes things easier?

Amazing how much depth this lends to the guitar riff, mostly invisibly to my dull ear.
Uh, J W, I drank that beer you wanted Olivier to hold, my bad. But had a new keg brought in for the band here, from the Bar(do) of Last Resort, don't let Che drink the whole thing.

I can imagine that it's kinda hard to add anything to what I did which is pretty full, having a rythm section and bass and other atmospheric and instrumental details already.... So we can just say this is my orchestration of the original riff
A couple of things though : ce can make such interesting rythmic sounds ourselves with so much character that I always feel it's too bad to use DAW instrument sounds, in particular drums ! It's a bit like going to mcdonals, for me, nutritiously speaking. Sure, it's a meal, but...
For instance, the finger snaps in the thing I did, were recorded with my laptop mic, they're snapping every second beat of this 14 beats 3/8+3/8+3/8+5/8 loop, so, something binary over a mostly ternary feel, which adds rythmic complexity and ambiguity to this rif, IMHO of course. It was then heavily EQed with a lo-cut filter, some reverb was added to the high frequencies, and then I panned it so that it would always be moving around the stereo space - samsaric !
And if we craft the sounds ourselves, we can make them so that they add texture to the particular "theme" we're onto, know what I mean ?
As for the bassline, how about the idea of playing notes which are occasionally different than the fundamental of the two chords used on this riff to add a bit of harmonic richness ? Unless the idea is \to have a solid, simple, big sound using a certain standard instrumentation. What is the idea, actually, is there one ? Papa Che ?
This riff is simple harmonically speaking, two chords, but complex rythmically, and I feel like this is what we have to build upon > play with and enrich the rythmic weirdness and ambiguity, invest the harmonic spaces which are opened around these two hollow E and D 7th chords (hollow because they both lack a third, J W's organ adds the third, actually).
Just as an example, which might be too much complexity for such a short snippet, and it wasn't perfectly in place and nuanced because I had to do it using the keypad of my laptop and clicking and dragging, but : the bassline in my thing went E, (A+D), G#, G, F#, (B+D), back to E, A, G#, G, F#, E, D, E - kind of a loop, not at all placed on every first beat of the loop. For an example of something really funky with complex chromatic harmonies which I really like : crazy english band Knower (warning : seriously funky stuff)
You guys might regret inviting me here, lol

Ok I've listened to it all chaps and I like it. Generally speaking all good ideas but if we can not play those drums properly so they follow this time sig we can not use this riff as it is.
So ...
I was chatting with Emil and he thinks to only play that first part of the riff and forget the second part. I agree with him and I will record it ASAP as such.
I suggest we start the song with my riff and all else (ideas) for maybe 4 bars then create a new vocal melody (Tim's lyrics Badass), maybe one verse or two then my riff with else we figure out then some Chorus and so on and on ... We need some kind of arrangement to make it easier to navigate.
Lyrics are to lead the way as per usual, or shall I say Vocals! We need to build around it!
Lemme record the first part of the riff using the drum loop we have and I hope it will fit throughout it so JW (or else) can chop and crop it and place it in the song where needed.
That bass sure sounds deep and I love it but would be great to get a busy bass so I will see if I can "teach" my Trio pedal to give me a good Alt Rock bass groove on this first part of the riff ... Will work on it TONIGHT SO HELP ME GOOOOD!!!!!
p.s. just got a new multi effects processor with IR (impulse response) guitar cabinets and shit great for silent recording at home even in the midst of loud family dynamics!

Ok here is the neewly recorded simplified guitar riff. I hope it will be easier to create drums and bass now. Tell me what ya think!
Feel free to chop and crop part that sounds best! Also tell me if you want it to be played cleaner or even more lead like.

Ok here is the neewly recorded simplified guitar riff. I hope it will be easier to create drums and bass now. Tell me what ya think!
Feel free to chop and crop part that sounds best! Also tell me if you want it to be played cleaner or even more lead like.

Well that sound to me like one measure of 14/8 followed by one measure of 12/8. Papa Che Dusko, does it work for you to play along with this as your click track?

I think I could play over that one.
But am thinking what all you think of the riff as it is now? To me it's lifeless. But if you find folks can build around it some bouncy goodness and we get a supporting bass and drums maybe it will pop out well.
However I just created a nice Fender amp patch on my new multi effect unit and think will sound better for this riff.
Derek, can I download that click track? (On my phone so cant see the options) I will need that track tonight so no rush but it helps if the download is permitted thanks man!

Thanks Derek! Here is my new take using your 14/8, 12/8 beat.
I think it sounds better with delay but I can try and record it without delay if it messes up things in the mix. My guitar will need more EQ-ing once in the mix for sure.
I need feedback folks! Tell me what you think so far? Do we go with this riff and you folks start building around it?
Or do we need the other part of the riff also? No? Yes? Maybe?

Excellent. Sometimes time zone differences work to our advantage. I can't look now, but will take a listen later on.

I'm gonna suggest something maybe controversial... maybe let's shelf this one for the time being? Or maybe just get some other stuff started from scratch, and put this one on the backburner for a little bit and come back to it?
I love the riff but seems like we're having some trouble bringing it all together. It's a complex riff which mostly just makes it difficult to work on since none of us have access to a real studio right now.
I just had to do this with another song I was working on with a friend, sometimes it's tough to let it go but it can be a good decision.
But, if we do let it go in this particular context, I'm still down to work on it with you Che and send you any sort of keyboard parts you want.

Thats ok with me. We can put a cork into this one and let it lay low until it cant hold no more and explodes into a glorious BOOM of tone of joy!
Maybe you lads have idea on how to preceed? Maybe we just throw a few riffs at each other and we pick the one we like the most? I sure have one hopidy-dopidy riff for a more dancy groovey minor feel in ... ehm key of E (of course, I hardly ever venture outside of key of E. Im a damn guitard!!! )

Over to you, Papa Che Dusko / J W / Emil / Olivier / Tim.
Add, change, subtract, or abandon as you wish.
Each instrument has its own track, so you'll need to do your own mixing.

Did I mention... it's an O'Doul's
In the Bar(do) of Last Resort (figuring that the DhO collab band practices in the bar's garage, mythologically speaking), even an O'Doul's will knock you on your ass! We're desperate here, anything will do. Sam does it on caffeine! Whatever gets anyone through until all sentient beings are saved, is on tap.

wow, this is nifty. Very trippy. A delicious taste of what's possible, as we coordinate the technologies and talents here.

There are two parts of the riff and each will need its own drum pattern otherwise it will not work and it is 13/7 I checked with my mate who worked on it before.
I cant help with drums as I have no clue how to do it nor how to count the beats. Maybe JW and Emil can do it?

I got it to work, sort of, with a 13/8 time signature at 164 bpm. I'll leave it for anyone else who is interested in further developing that one.

Yeah it could be 13/8 ... all these time sigs are over my head. These riff ideas come outside of me without me thinking about it, then my mates tell me about what time sigs these are
Lets see what JW and Emil have to say about it.
