Which specific practice is more conducive to being aware of sense doors?

I had a small drug induced realisation that all my life choices are influenced by things that make me feel good. There seems to be this undercurrent of addiction driven behaviour that permeates everything that I do and it blocks clear thinking.

I believe I passed arising and passing away several years ago but my level of practice has deteriorated so much that I now barely do. But now I want to get back into it because I have had similar thoughts, without drugs. I want to always be aware of this behaviour. And with the right thoughts and intention I can see myself overcoming this. 

At the time, I was practicing breaths on nostril but I learnt that mahasis method of breath on abdomen and mental noting is useful as an awareness practice. Is this the defacto practice to consider or can anyone recommend other practices that I should look into.
