Help me locate this original quote from the Buddha
Posts: 140 Join Date: 2/17/10 Recent PostsI am looking for an original quote from the Buddha but I can't find
it. | |
It is about the final enlightenment and he compares it to a house
that has had the foundation removed and can not be rebuilt,
comparing the house to the ego.
Can anyone provide me with the quote of point me to it?
It may be somewhere in what he said about the third noble truth but
I am not sure. |

I googled "buddha house quote".

Thereupon he spoke these words of victory: "Seeking but not finding the house builder, I hurried through the round of many births: Painful is birth ever and again. O house builder, you have been seen; You shall not build the house again. Your rafters have been broken up, Your ridgepole is demolished too. My mind has now attained the unformed Nibbâna And reached the end of every sort of craving."n12

Udana Vatthu
https://www.tipitaka.net/tipitaka/dhp/verseload.php?verse=153
They are also part of the final chanting of Goenka during adhitthana group sittings on retreat (Anicca vati sankhara etc...)

Tom, looks like people are providing "broken ridgepole/rafters" metaphor quotes, which is pretty well known... but I don't recall "removing the foundation" metaphor quote... so I'm just watching this thread

Shargrol,
Maybe "removing the foundation" is an english metaphor for "sabbā te phāsukā bhaggā" "all your ribs are broken"?
Or you imply that it Tom's quote might refer to another verse altogether? It did sound like the first words uttered about the Buddha after his awakening, which are quite famous...
The analysis of the second verse (Dh 154)
