My first attainment

I don't know if it's exactly "attainment", but today, after 43 months of meditation (initially 3x40 minutes a day, then 2x90 minutes a day and for the last year 1x120 minutes a day, mostly samatha, sometimes Mahasi noting and sometimes koan "Who am I?") I had olfactory hallucinations. Something between the smell of rust (Fe2O3) and spring soil. Interesting.

Isn't it interesting how vivid and clear those can be?

ah!  how sweet   ;-)

shargol rings the little bell and an attendant shouts 'next'

meanwhile.... genaro (watching the live feed) rushes to bury some rusty iron nails in the veg patch in eager anticipation of spring.

(FWIW all my perceptions are hallucinations, but just some of them say so.)

Interesting! I also had those, mostly by sound. I wondered why they come? Sometimes it scared me. Sometimes I thought it was interesting. Sometimes I just note it and forget it emoticon I think thats what to go for

That's really cool.

I had olfactory hallucinations too, smelling bread and biscuit in a frost covered winter forest.
Am glad to know that is meditation related, I thought I was just glitching.

43 months to get another sense experience? Something tells me you are doing it wrong.

Generally, in any forum, its advisable to encourage people. Meditation attainments take time. Enthusiasm is difficult to maintain. And a 'good job' or 'congrats' is always appreciated.

If you wish to discourage, and have genuine reasons for doing so, it might be a good idea to detail out your observations.

1. What precisely is wrong
2. How can it be corrected
3. A detailed correction plan

OP might actually enjoy such a post.

Thor has been warned that continuing this rather nasty posting style will earn him a deactivated account on DhO.

OMG what is wrong with you people? You think every problem can be solved with nicities! Have you not heard of the stick that monks use to keep their students awake?
The TRUTH is PAINFULL to EVERYONE, at first.
The ONLY time we learn things is when they are accompanied by pain or suffering. That is the ENTIRE reason we are inhabiting as human beings.

The most important lessons we learn are learnt from suffering, NOT platitudes.

1. Who's 'you people'?
2. Are you a teaching monk?
3. Are you speaking to a student?
4. Have you appointed yourself as people's teacher?
5. Have people here accepted you as everybody's teacher
6. If so has everyone consented to be harshly spoken to?
7. In order to teach those whom you view as your students, are you going to issue measured doses of suffering?
8. Are you the judge of what other people's ENTIRE reason for existing is?

I am not writing this to start a fight. I am trying to understand you.

Edit: I dont think anything good is going to come out of me writing to you.

Alright Thor. Carry on emoticon

This has to be the most elegant use of the socratic method I have ever seen.

Please don't deactivate anyone. I should have written that this was my first communicable or discernible attainment. In the second year of meditation, I saw with open eyes a glowing cloud or a tree with glowing clouds for branches, with a spring flowing into its roots from my nose. Now it happens to me that everything in my field of vision turns white or, on the contrary, darkens. Feelings of the sacred, the sublime, a solemn atmosphere and many other states that cannot be described in words. The olfactory hallucination was something completely new for me, and something tangible that can be described for others.

The olfactory hallucinations are markers of progress.
Such hallucinations happen when concentration (or samadhi) skills become signnificantly stronger.
My advice would be to celebrate the deepening of samadhi and to take the hallucinations with a pinch of salt. Over a period of time (could be a week or a few weeks) the hallucinations will fade and the samadhi skills will become stronger still.
