I'm wondering what makes the experience of the stages of insight either mild or extreme? If the symptoms are less obvious, is the path less effective? Or is any progress progress? Is it a sign of weak concentration? Do the stages lose their potency if you've just gone through them many times?

Probably a sign more so of weak concentration more than anything else. Up your concentration/samadhi skills! You will perceive and discern more with a heightened, malleable, pliant and luminous mind and thus 'nanas' etc will be experienced from that vantage point.
