I just found the medical name of the knee injury caused by sitting meditation. It is a torn miniscus. A good friend had to have surgery on both knees for this after too much "sitting through the pain" at Zen sesshins.

Below is a link to an article in Yoga Journal that explains it. You can also google _ torn miniscus lotus _ or _ torn miniscus meditation _and find much more.

If a someone tells you to sit through knee pain, try to educate them on this.

I agree.

Avoid damaging your knees.

My right ACL (anterior cruciate ligament, one of the 4 major knee ligaments) is hanging by a few threads at best and it leads to right knee instability at strange times on occasion, and I know of no specific injury, but after tons of sitting, I wonder if that is what did it.

Thus, knee pain that persists when you stand up: bad. Change sitting position somehow to avoid this. That's my advice.
