Henry's Monthly Practice Log

I'm starting this log as a way to keep accountability for my own practice and because it may be helpful for myself or others to look back on as I progress on the path.

For background, I have dabbled with meditation since I was in my early teens, but really started taking it seriously in 2021, at age 24. After sitting with a higher degree of frequency and for a longer duration for about six months, I heard about Goenka retreats. I did my first 10-day retreat in 2022, and have done 3 (maybe 4?) since then. I understand that many people on this forum don't have a super favorable view of Goenka retreats. Some criticism I find understandable and some I think is relatively misguided. I will write up my thoughts on the organization/practice at some point soon, but for this practice log I'm not sure it's relevant.

My current practice is Goenka-style (hereafter to be referred to as U Ba Khin style) vipassana. My practice goal is one hour, twice daily. For the past month or so, however, I have only managed about half that frequency. I am trying to find balance in my life with a few other things, as well as working on sila, and trying to manage some health problems that are likely negatively affecting my practice. None of these are valid reasons to not meditate, though, and I do recognize that.

My goal for November is to really hone in on sila and to maintain my twice-daily sits. I have never had very strong concentration, and I suspect (relatively) poor sila and poor sleep quality are the reasons.

Welcome emoticon

It seems that, recently, there has been some positive interest in the Goenka tradition on this forum. Alex's log and this thread come to mind.

All the best for your practice and your other life goals!

Welcome, Henry!

The Goenka retreats have been great for me.  I attended my first one in January 2025, served one in June, and sat another in August.  Also, I'm able to attend group sits every week or two.  I appreciate the technique and the structure, and I've made some friends in the community.

One hour, twice daily is a great goal!  It's worth it.

In addition to the Insight in Perspective book review linked above by Kailin, Smiling Stone has Some views on the technique in the Goenka tradition.

Keep practicing, and be happy!
