Kenneth Folk and I were thinking about helping to create a gathering of people who really wanted to talk about and discuss practice, real, personal practice, as well as have some scheduled, moderated debates where people discussed various controversies, such as and particularly things related to maps.
If anyone is interested, chime in here.

Count me as a maybe. It depends on timing and how much vacation time I'll have left by the time it happens. I've been talking with Kenneth for a few years. It'll be a pleasure to meet him in person.

I am in, can we do this at the BG conference at some point since a ton of us will be there this year?

Regarding BG: some of this already does happen there, but tagging on a day or two after or before where we found a place would save on travel time, duplicated effort, and the like...
It is not a bad idea.
We will need to think about the hard logistics in general: where, when, how long, etc.
Neither of us want to do a lot of coordination, so people will be responsible for their meals and lodging wherever it happens, much as BG does.
More thoughts?
Daniel

I suspect that it's unlikely that I could attend, being on the other side of a giant ocean to most of you. But I'd be delighted to know that this kind of thing was going on, and even happier if the highlights were disseminated to those of us in foreign parts.
Now, if there was ever a pragmatic dharma retreat happening, then I would sell my eye teeth to get there.

It's great to see so much interest. Daniel and I were thinking of something modeled after the early days of the Royal Society of London, founded back in the mid 17th Century for the study of natural philosophy (and alchemy, which was about as close as they got to science and chemistry at the time). The best and the brightest of the day would gather together to share ideas and information, inspire one another, argue passionately, and just hang out with their fellow nerds.
Interesting idea, staying a day after the BGeeks conference for our own little thing. If we decide to that, we'll have to decide soon so we can all make or modify travel plans. Any more thoughts on this, or administrative volunteers? We would need a place in Boulder where we could meet and talk, preferably out of the weather, with a modicum of privacy (a house or conference room, as opposed to a tavern, for example), and with a low level of ambient noise, so the discussions can be heard.

Hi everyone,
I love the idea of piggy-backing something onto BG. The problem with tacking it on at the beginning or end is that many will already have flights and accommodation booked. I think it would be best to try and dovetail it into the existing BG schedule (but then, I am not sure what Daniel and Kenneth have in mind precisely as a format). For example, the conference starts later on Friday, which leaves the beginning of the day wide open.

Hello:
I will be in Boulder for the weekend, but not at the conference, and would still like to connect with folks.
I am going to a retreat near there on Monday afternoon, and doing Jin Shin Jyutsu in the area over the weekend.
I am also looking for an inexpensive place to stay.
It would be nice to meet with folks and share.
with metta, Constance

It might be a bit big but I have fond memories of this place: Chataqua Hall
There are also lots of open places to meet around there but a lot depends on the size of the crowd. I would think that word o mouth would swell it a bit if it is to take place AFTER the actual BG conf.
Lots of fun to all.

Hey, Vince and Emily Horn have offered to host a gathering at their apartment the day after the Buddhist Geeks Conference in Boulder, Co (meaning August 19th).
I realize this is late notice and probably everyone has booked their rooms and tickets and all that, but it is a good, kind offer and would be really easy.
I will be there, anyway.
Hope to see you also,
Daniel

Incidentally, I get into Boulder on the night of the 15th and will have the day of the 16th also, as well as the night of the 18th perhaps (depending on what happens) if anyone is interested in hanging out. I fly out the afternoon of the 20th.

Yeah, looking forward to hosting this geeky gathering!
I'll probably create a google event with more instructions on how to get to my place, etc. and then drop the link here.
Best,
-Vince

Wish I could make it (I leave Monday morning), but I would definitely be up for something on Friday as I get in Thursday night also.
