No non-sense psychotherapy ressources?

I'm looking for books that aren't specifically about the dharma and that deal with content. I have an hard time believing that conventional psychotherapy is of much value as there is a tendency buy the authors to buy way too much into there theory. If you have any suggestions of reading material that you consider of value and that deal with content, even better if there is some concept of non-duality behind but it's optional. Writing on addictions would interesting too.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Make sure you use your ability to note throughout the day but instead to check what your beliefs are doing to you throughout the day and it can be a great help.

Don't have any experience dealing with addiction specifically. But here are few of the ones I have found to be generally helpful...

A useful model for dealing with conflicting motivations and a fragmented inner psyche:

Being honest with yourself and others to uncover blind-spots, have greater intimacy in relationships, and help facilitate personal growth:
Radical Honesty, how to trasnform your life by telling the truth.

Lying - by sam harriss

Sentence completion type stuff helps uncover beliefs, and helps remove the unhealthy ones with ones that are more useful:

The work by Byron Katie

(I think where enlightenment comes into this is that it releases attachment to beliefs, making the process of choosing a pragmatically useful 'belief' / mental model easier.)

One of my first, favourite reading was "Emotional Alchemy", by Tara Bennet Goleman; it's basically cognitive therapy combined with buddhist mindfullness... very nice.

On a more meditation-free and more behavioural type, I'm a big fan of Watzlawick's works in general, but I'm not really able to point a single psychoterapy book.

For a very much powers-related approach, Psycho-Cybernetics is a very nice book (published in 1960); I think you can also find it in pdf version if you spend some time looking online...

Joko Beck's two books fit the bill - very down to earth, very psychological, written from a non-dual perspective, and are primarily about living your life off cushion. Her student's books, Barry Magid, also also good - he writes from the perspective of a zen teacher (in Beck's no bullshit zen tradition) and as a psychotherapist.

Adding my 2c here...

Not self-help resources unfortunately but Both Zengar neuro treatments and Somatic Experiencing have good words from other meditators on helping with issues that can stall progress (or worse). I am doing the somatic stuff myself now and it seems like a slow but powerful way to start to unlock trapped emotion-thought stored in the body from past trauma or conditioning.

Thanks guys. This is more information than I can handle. Richard, you mentionned me CBT in a previous post. I guess it's time I look at it. I liked the Bono quote about moving to a new expression. I want to explore how much reprogramming of our personality is possible. I feel sometimes that my personality is pretty much frozen and I'm simply getting closer to my optimal personality by walking this path. In other words, I'm just getting rid of the side effects of the path and some compulsive habits that I had developed to cope with the anxiety. There is a spot in equanimity where I feel pretty close to my ideal self. Still, there is always more to learn.

I think if you want a good article that was posted recently about changing habits/personality etc I would look to Thanissaro Bhikkhu:

Cutting paths in the mind

We can't be unconditioned and function. We need to create new desirable conditioning.

Simon,

Byron Katie.

Similar to CBT/Actualism style of thought watching/stopping. But has some original ideas. Simple to apply.

I should definitely look at this. Content is puzzling in equanimity. It can be fleeting, sometimes it just feel like the right thing to do is just let the narrative goes, and of course, there is the radical "shut up" method. We need to not loose in sight that we are applying techniques of tradition that were concerned with non-duality mainly but did very poorly at re-rooting those thoughts toward a more positive mindset, at least for the duration of the path.
