So, last year we had a great time meeting for about 12 hours in a space after the Buddhist Geeks conference, just hanging out, talking about stuff, debating things, having a dance party, etc. It was really wonderful and I want to do it again.

So, this is the first announcement that this will very likely happen in Boulder, Colorado on October 19th after the 2014 Buddhist Geeks conference ends. I will keep you all posted here with details. I haven't picked the venue yet, will let you all know when I do.

Thus, if you are purchasing plane tickets or booking your rooms and can swing an additional day or fly out a bit later, come on down and say hello and hang out a bit. It will probably run until midnight that last day after the conference ends.

I am really looking forward to this.

as a former resident of boulder ('80s) Chautauqua hall was a big favorite but maybe too big.  great for music too.  bobby mcfarin told me it was like singing inside of a guitar.

Daniel, is this still on for the 19th? Have you promoted it to others who may be interested?

I'm in.

I live in Boulder, and I was thinking of making an open invite to Dho people for dinner at my home.  We could potentially meld the two events together: Potluck dinner slash post-conference hangout.  I'd have to clear this with my wife (also a Dho member).

The DhO Gathering in Boulder will happen the afternoon/evening/night of October 19th somewhere. I am going to see if we can hold it at the Gathering Place at Shine restaurant, which serves really good food and is in a great location. It has a really nice space for having meetings. I just emailed them. If we can't hold it there, I will find somewhere else for it to happen, possibly at the Millennium Harvest Hotel (where the conference is), or the place we had it last time if they are free.

Assume it will be from mid afternoon (if at Shine, will start around 3:30pm, as that is when their last event that day ends) until we close some place down, likely late (think 10p-midnight or something like that).

All meditation friends are welcome. It will be free of charge. I will simply pay for the space to avoid complexity and as my bit of donation and service to the community. Last year we had a great time. There will be a dance party at the end regardless of where we hold it to shake it all off. I really look forward to this.

It looks like this will probably happen at Shine, a restaurant and gathering space found here: www.shineboulder.com

I think the schedule will be this:

3:30-6pm: meet in Gathering Space at Shine.
6:00-9:30pm we move to their Lounge for dinner, drinks, etc. I will actually need some rough head count to make sure we reserve the appropriate amount of space. If you are intersted in dinner there, let me know ASAP.
9:30pm-11pm: go back to Gathering Space, likely have dance party last hour (10p-11p). After that, if we still want to hang out, we can find a new place to go.

I am still finalizing this, so plans may change.

I hope to see you all there,

Daniel

Here is some info from another site....they got this email.
Dear Buddhist Geeks,

This will be the 4th Buddhist Geeks Conference that we have organized and hosted. Over the years, we have enjoyed the challenge of taking risks and pushing the barriers of traditional thought. We chose this year's conference theme--convergence--to reflect the increased intensity and speed at which multiple disciplines are coming together.  And we've focused on intimacy as our primary design principle, recognizing that the only way to explore something with depth is if there's a sense of closeness and shared purpose. As we confirmed the speakers and topics, selected the venue, and crowd sourced for new voices this year, we wondered--where will we go from here?

After much consideration we've decided that we won't be hosting the Buddhist Geeks Conference in 2015 and we're not sure yet if the event will move to a less frequent rhythm, or if this may in fact be our last gathering of this kind.  After 8 years of working on this project the reality of impermanence and exponential change has highlighted, for us as organizers, the need to be in a constant state of examination and transmutation.  We're not sure where it will go from here, but we're delighted to be gathering, at least one more time, to explore the convergence of Buddhism with our contemporary lives.

Alright, this is happening according to the Shine schedule above.

We won't have the lounge all to ourselves, but we will have plenty of space for dinner and hanging out.

I will rent a nice sound system for the final dance party.

Should be a lot of fun.

See you all there,

Daniel

Attention! Sudden change of Venue!

Due to scheduling difficulties, this will now happen where it happened last year, at "BC3", which is not as easy to find, but did prove to be a great place to hang out last year, so I anticipate that this year will be good also.

BC3, aka the Boulder Center for Conscious Community, is found upstairs in the corner of a strange little strip mall in Boulder.

We will actually start about 3pm, though I will likely be there a bit earlier to set up. We have the space all night, so there is no upper time limit really as long as we are out by the next morning, so I understand, and it has multple rooms, a good stereo, a white-board that was helpful last year, chairs, and a nice greasy Chinese restaurant right next door just like I like 'em.

Hope to see as many of you there as can make it.

The address is

1637 28th Street, Boulder, CO 80301

Yes indeed, thanks for organizing the meeting Daniel!

Also, I'm sorry the dance part was only 5 minutes long, but that part was a *GREAT* 5 minutes.

I'm curious to hear how the conference went. I hear that they did a competition with an Emotiv EEG device. Anyone tried it?

I found the conference a delightfully eclectic collection of Buddhist stuff, ranging from incredibly erudite (and sometimes soporific) discource to rousing discussions of fine points of practicalism, and beyond.  Daniel radiated the room with a talk about the powers.

The EEG guys were up and running the whole time.  They had two modes of demo, the first is just 'goop up, hook up' and watch a 3D semi-transparent brain model rotate with pretty colors arrising and passing through-out it.  With just a few minutes to play with it, I didn't see evidence that the display data had anything to do with my brain state.  That may have just been that I'm not the most skilled meditator, and also that their setup had the users facing the whole conference floor and observers just over the display you're looking at.

The second thing, a game/competition was more interesting.  They took an 8 second baseline of EEG data, then gave a simple task to perform for 8 seconds (the reference state), then gave you a minute to replicate the reference task mind state.  There was a visual thingy to help you fine-tune your mind state to replicate the reference state.

I did feel like that was a meaningful assesment of self control of the mind.  The were about 60 participants I think, I got a score of ~30k, the winner of the competion got a score of 240k and the second place score was ~200k and maybe 25% of the scores were between 100k and 200k.  I saw the guy get the winning score.  For what it's worth, he said he felt he was still under the influence of his sleeping pill from the night before.

I think it would be pretty easy to raise one score with practice and good conditions.

Dear Russell,

Glad you liked it. I had fun also. I was very glad that people got something out of it. Hopefully, we will come up with a gathering next year if Vince and Emily don't host one.

I too want to say thanks too for showing up and getting the space and talking for so long about so much stuff so selflessly. It's very nice.

And that would be great to have a gathering next year. I know there's a lot of people in Europe who would probably like to come to something like that. Maybe we can have it in neutral ground like Iceland or maybe Greenland hehehe
