Hi Jenner.  Not in anyway able to assist you in your Quest but on reading your practice log i was moved to laughter by the Stephen Hawking speak  "Could have sat till the heat death of the universe" cracked me up!  I love the all encompassing feeling that gave.

And God! The persistant Dharma Dance i engaged in across my practice.  Two steps forward, three steps back ... three steps forward, two steps back.  The dark fight with huge desire for advancement.  Reading others practice logs with uneasy desperation.  Hearing and seeing others bypass or leapfrog me.  Always, eyes on the prize.

Then the sweet reward of the A&P and conformation that we are indeed doing verifiable, proven, repeatable things here.  Handed down these 2,500 years.

If any poor, broken, dark night yogi needed confirmation of the rightness of The Noble Eight fold Path, it was i.

Your compassion and understanding of all us crazy's and your ability to focus in, on the work aspect of things, sounds very like equanimity.

Climbing out of that hole of negative mind speak was so, so hard for me also.

Anyway, enough of my interupting your practice, and let me, hopefully, be the first to welcome your contribution to this wonderful place.  This great haven Daniel has created for we few.

Please take great care to extract the maximum joy you can from your practice (unlike i) and enjoy the ride.

Yours in the Dharma.  Much Metta Jenner

Stu.

G'day Jenner.

Don't ever doubt the validity of your place here.  Yeah!

Your posts, on yours and my practice logs, were so good for me.  Not that i see any credibility in astrological signs, but i'm a Leo, and everybody knows that cats love to be stroked.

I'm at presant trawling my way through the 1,500 odd talks at the Dharma Seed site and i came on one by Rick Hanson called "Cultivating Inner Strength" and as you can see it's something i'm in need of right now!
Rick asks the participants to recall a time when you'd last been made to feel worthwhile.  I'd only read your log entry less than an hour previous, so suddenly i didn't have to dredge thro the memory for such rare occurrences.  Your words of love and support were "just there" and the talk opened up to a beautiful meditation.

Before Buddhism, if i was listening to instructions or talks i'd take copious notes, miss parts of the talk cause i wasn't fast enough.  Then rarely if ever would i reread the damn things.

Then along came a teacher who suggested to me that whatever level of concentration you've attained, place yourself in it and listen to the instruction as if it were a guided meditation.  I'm constantly on the lookout for hour or more teachings with which to treat as meditations.  Not always but as a support to my normal meditation.  Chioceless Awareness.

I enjoyed the meditation/talk big time as i'm the last person to think to love me .....i mean ..... we don't deserve anyones love.  Do we!   Bullshit!
Give it a crack, and i hope you like it.

Oh, and regarding that truckload of salt ... take it home yeah, we be mates.

Jenner:
I wanted to add that I've been reading a little more here and over at Aloha Dharma and I realized I have no idea what I don't know, I'm a total beginner, and I definitely have no clue where I am on the maps.

I had this urge last week to really determine my stage/place but that's sort of evaporated and I'm content to practice and observe and see what happens. I don't want to prescribe my own reactions based on where I think I am. It's like a weight off my shoulders. Feels good.
Best to only rely on "maps" when completely lost and in need of motivation, direction and perhaps 'faith/hope'. When motivation, direction and faith that what one is doing will lead in the desired direction are presenting, then "maps, schmaps".

Sweet! I super appreciate your advice.

Certainly the thing that hooked me first about insight meditation was the reliance on observation and personal experience. Gather evidence, investigate evidence, rinse, repeat.

"Maps, schmaps." emoticon
