Hi B Man,

Thanks, haven't heard of that Bhante V snippets before. Will check them. Regarding Bhante V's method, he uses metta as a way to reach soft jhanas and so be able to do vippasana there. As far as I know, he's stream entry is reached once you see Dependent Origination in 8th Jhana, and that seems to be hard work for several years (By the way, Daniel Ingram says you can only see DO at the entrance/exit of Nirodha Samapatti,  something only achieved by Arhats; I have asked him about it, with no success). Check Bhante V's video from around 40 minutes mark for the next 20~30 minutes, where he explains the insight map:

Excerpt from above link.

Many students progress quickly when using this method and in a week's worth of meditation in a retreat situation, or 6 weeks of daily sitting of 30min to an hour, will experience the first meditation level as described in the Suttas. And there are 8 of them and they are all easily attainable with liberation as the goal.

It looks as though he is referring to first jhana, but still....

Bhante V's stream entry is different from the one from the Sayadaw tradition.

In anycase, it is very possible for people to get some sort of a permanant shift in their baseline state in 6 weeks of deliberate practice.

Whether you want to call it stream entrty or not is a different matter.

ah I thought he was referring to 1st path - as in the 8 stages described here (excerpt from wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_enlightenment)

The Sangha of the Tathagata's disciples (Ariya Sangha) can be described as including four or eight kinds of individuals. There are four [groups of noble disciples] when path and fruit are taken as pairs, and eight groups of individuals, when each path and fruit are taken separately:

(1) the path to stream-entry; (2) the fruition of stream-entry;
(3) the path to once-returning; (4) the fruition of once-returning;
(5) the path to non-returning; (6) the fruition of non-returning;
(7) the path to arahantship; (8) the fruition of arahantship.

In his mp3  Stages of Enlightenment, Bhante V states that under his method you reach 3rd Path or 4th Path (and stabilize it in at least two weeks or at most seven years), once you see Dependent Origination in detail after exiting 8th Jhana. He kind of dismiss 1st and 2nd Paths, saying that a disciple of the Buddha achieved 1st Path just by hearing his teachings, but that 3rd and 4th Path you need to meditate following the Suttas.
