Focus on object - wider field

I haven't done much object meditation, mostly breathwork and energy.
So today I tried sitting and focussing on an onbject in my room. Fleeting thoughts etc, let them go and return focus. But I find that one of those fleeting distractions seems to be focus itself - cognitively isolating the object from it's surroundings - "this is my focus object, I will look at this object". But the singular emphasis seems to naturally fade, and then I take in all surroundings in equal measure, and it's an easy sense of being present. Kind of just sitting, making no special effort to concentrate on one particular, but with relative clarity of mind.
Would people count this as success and progress in this style of meditation ?
Or is there actual benefit to maintaining that singular divsion of the visual field into object of focus and the rest that is ignored ?
