Places in Thailand with focus on Samatha-Vipassana/Tranquillity-Insight?

Hello, I wonder if anyone knows about places to practice insight-wisdom meditation in Thailand, especially around Chiang Mai but other areas OK too. For the right place, elsewhere in SE Asia is OK too. emoticon

Looking for structure & inspiration, but not hardcore concentration if that makes sense (which would include Goenka & Mahasi styles, which might rule out a lot... emoticon )

Also open to places that support you to do your own thing in meditation rather than just one technique that they teach. Or, they teach one thing but don't mind you doing your own thing.

I read some info about Wat Umong near Chiang Mai - they teach noting but it sounds maybe not really hardcore concentration or at least that they don't mind if you do a bit of your own thing? Not sure this is the right impression - open to hearing any accounts about this.

Many thanks.

Wat Umong was actually the first place that came to mind. I believe they teach anapanasati as the main practice. This is anapanasati in line with the four foundations of mindfulness, and not just as a focused samatha type practice. Ajahn Buddhadasa, who the monastery was built for (IIRC) wrote a book on the practice. You can find the pdf here: http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/anapanasati.pdf Perhaps check that out and see if it's what you're looking for.

Wat Rampoeng is near Chiangmai, they do vipassana retreats there. The main program is 28 days but you can extend that.
