describes studies showing the brain has two separate networks, one that is used for analytical thinking and one that is used for empathetic thinking, and one supresses the other when active.
With LSD, however, it seems the whole brain becomes active and so the two networks don't supress each other. Or, at least that's how it looks from the MRI pictures in the article.
