It is said the path to enlightenment is 'wisdom' (16 nanas);

in contrast, Ven. Dhammavuddho holds that enlightenment is (described in the Suttas as) the destruction of the asavas (uncontrolled mental outflows; flow of consciousness);

yet meditation teachers never talk about the asavas.

If you like you can read about asava in the "sabbasava sutta" (MN. 2)

It's a complementary view to the maps. In Theravada you have to suppress the asavas first. But the destroying happens (according to Theravada) in the path moment (the second moment where the consciousness experience/takes nirvana/nibbana as a mind object)

Enlightment means in Theravada that the ability of the mind to produce so called asubha (not nice) dhammas is destroyed for ever and that is a synonym to the destruction of the asavas.
