Hi every one.
I was wondering if there are any Good Meditation centres in Melbourne that anyone knows of. I would especially like to hear about anywhere that people think is 'particularly' good emoticon
Cheers!

Wow, I'm guessing you don't mean Melbourne Florida USA, to which I'd reply not too far away there's all kinds of stuff in Orlando. From the cheers I'd guess you mean the very much larger Melbourne in Oz.

This has come up before many times. Alot of people agree that Sayadaw U Pandita Jnr, is an enlightened teacher.

I stayed with him for a few days, and he is quite a character to say the least. Very lively and precise, no-nonsense and he can be quite strict and stern too. It was quite wonderful to see him in action. When we sat in meditation, he would pace quickly between everyone to keep them alert I believe. Then when he gave a talk he reeled off some pretty hard-hitting dharma. Which possibly couldve offended a few softer people.

I would check him out for sure. Although one thing thats a bit annoying, is the amount of meat these Burmese monks consume, even though I am not veg, I prefer a nice veg meal when I go to the temple, but anyway, thats just me.

Metta Man,

Lama Choedak Rinpoche http://www.jamchen.com/Spiritual+Director/default.aspx is the spiritual director of a number of centres around Australia including the Jamchen Buddhist Centre in Balwyn VIC. Here are his movements for the next few months. http://www.sakya.com.au/WhereisRinpocheThisWeekend.html. The best thing I ever did was to attend his mediation classes to first learn to meditate. I have not heard the Jamchen centres resident teacher http://www.jamchen.com/Resident+Teacher/default.aspx speak but it might be worth a visit.

In Victoria the Goenka Vipassana center in Woori Yallock has been a favorite of mine for many years

I am a Melbournite, but currently in Sydney till September. I have also heard great things about Sayadaw U Pandita Jr. (from Daniel I.'s notes). Springvale is a way out from the city, but may be worth the trip.

I have attended the weekly sittings at BSV (traditional Theravada) in Malvern but I am somewhat detracted by the traditional religious flavour, and by the sheer numbers, which makes for a more formal and less educational situation. The meditations are usually guided by the Bikkhunis, who are very serene.

While in Sydney, I've been attending the two sanghas attached to Sydney Insight Meditators. They are broadly Western Vipassana groups.

Currently there is no comparable Melbourne group, and this might be because of a lack of Western (non-denominational) teachers in Melbourne. I have been thinking about trying to start a practice group when I return. I have mentioned this to some of the sangha here, and they have been encouraging and suggested I may be able to get some "sponsorship" (in the form of exposure via their network, I assume) from SIM. I haven't contacted anyone formally about this yet. If we were to generate enough interest, we may have a group which could perhaps attract the occasional teacher from the ITCA (http://www.dharma.org.au/3-ITCA-teachers.html)

There is a strong network of Aussie Insight Meditation groups and retreats listed here (note the lack of Melbourne groups emoticon):

Good luck with your search. If anyone here is interested in a Melbourne Insight group, please, let's talk further emoticon

David
