I'm having trouble too! The list of recipient names appears in alphabetical order up to 'P' but then becomes jumbled and I can't find the name of the person who I'm trying to write to! Any suggestions?

In the "Compose New Message" page, start to write the nickname of the person on the "To" field.
Suggestions of usernames starting with the typed letters will start to appear.
But be aware that if an username starts with a special character you should type it first.

Thanks for your help. Managed to get it working. When I load the 'Compose New Message' page my computer seems to really slow down (due to running a script). Seems like I wasn't patient enough. Sure there's some learning in there for me...!
