Dear All,

If you find a problem with this newly migrated version of the DhO, please post it here in this thread to let us know and we will address it as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Possibly due to the migration but words in individual posts appear truncated over two lines at the end of the page line (ie bit li
ke this).
Thanks,
Nick

Hm, I'm not seeing that error, do you perhaps have a link to a post with the problem? Or maybe a screenshot?

The stickies and urgents and announcements not staying on the top of the board in recent posts is a know problem and we are working on it.

Hi Simon,
I'm on Windows IE. Wonder if that is the problem? I can't work out how to post a screenshot but it appears on all posts that I open. Hope that helps?

Looks OK. Just wondering if we will still have the bolded thread titles for threads that have unread posts? Currently all posts look the same to me so I can't tell from glancing if there are new posts.

I was just about to say that. This is extremely important!

Two other things:
1) It seems all threads are marked as unread for me, so I guess whether a thread was read or not didn't make it through the migration?
2) If I refresh a thread that I've already seen, the last post is bolded regardless of whether I already read it.

There's an issue with your DNS settings. Visiting dharmaoverground.org takes you to a "Welcome to OS X Server" page. Visiting www.dharmaoverground.org takes you to the right place.

Oh, right, that's my fault, missing serveralias in the webserver config. Fixed now, thanks.

Regarding the read/unread bold/unbold issue. We're looking into it, it's still an advertised feature of the 6.2 liferay message board so it _should_ work, we're not sure why it doesn't yet. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

Content problem not 6.2 problem....various links under the links button (top of page next to wiki) go to websites that no longer exist. (priority low)

Good Job!

Is the encoding utf-8?

Letters with unusual accents don't display correctly, such as the l in Paweł K.'s last Name.

Here are some Pāḷi accents:

āīū
ṅṁṃṭḍṇñḷ

if these show up correctly in this post, maybe the migration script is not utf-8 aware.

Cheers,
Florian

Ugh, right, I probably messed up the encoding somewhere along the way when getting the data from the mysqldb so it's probably been converted to latin-1 or similar in between. It shouldn't cause to much trouble though as the discussions are mostly in english. Pawal will have to live with an invalid last name in the 10 days of migrated posts emoticon

It does this on my iPhone but there are dashes on the broken words. It does the book-style breaking of lines instead of the regular web thing. I guess the lines don't show up on some browsers?

We are just playing around with themes now. This current one is experimental.

As to the chat function, i have no earthly idea: will look into that.

Messages may be coming shortly, depending.

Hello

Does this new version support having thanks &/
or  like, agree buttons on the posts

If yes, please enable the feature, maybe after things get stable.

Thanks

Ah, so many memories of the history of the place.

The agree/thumbs-up/ratings button can be activated, but long ago in the early days of the DhO it was turned on and, from my point of view, chaos ensued. Bad chaos like something really horrible? No. However, it rapidly devolved into some weird sort of popularity contest. How much of that was a mirror of things going on that had nothing intrinsically to do with having the agree/thumbs-up/ratings button turned on? I am not sure, but I would actually prefer to keep it off, if that is ok with you all.

If you want to make some strong case for turning it on, please do, and perhaps we should just try it again to either prove me right or wrong.

Thoughts?

I would strongly prefer it that way, too.

If I remember correctly, it the chaos was pretty bad for a few weeks, moderators-intervening bad.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but I have trouble to cut/copy/paste, on Firefox (Linux). Every time I try to paste something, I will get a pop up, nagging me about the security settings that will not allow this forum to look in my clipboard.

Because of your browser security settings, the editor is not able to access your clipboard data directly. You are required to paste it again in this
window.
Please paste inside the following box using the keyboard (Ctrl/Cmd+V) and hit OK

It's a nuisance, especially as I really don't want to change the security settings.
And I think Richard mentioned the tiny font, that seems to be the default. Now I have to select all and pick a larger font.

On the positive side, at least we can post again, I was expecting that that would take a couple of days at least.

Found some info on the pingbacks, because I think they werent' here before?

Working on private messaging. Wouldn't hold your breath, as it is harder to perceive the sensations that make it up when it is not moving. ;)

Two other problems:

This post-editor takes two returns to get it to go to the next line, very annoying.

Also, when I composed my massive response to Omega Point, I did it in TextEdit on my Mac, and when I went to cut and paste it into this editor, it had no returns so was one giant paragraph. I went back to the original TextEdit file and put in double returns after each paragraph and it still did the same thing, so I finally gave up and posted a .pdf of it, which obviously is not as good as having it be in the thread and easier to read.

Thoughts?

I also can't find the "Recent Posts" button on my iPad - was it removed? It would be useful to have it back on the top of the page.

When using my phone I have the recent posts link hidden behind a button with three lines, next to the search icon, can you find it there?

Hi Daniel,

thanks for the upgrade.

I posted about 5 posts in last 4 weeks which disappeared in the new version. I admit I've read the sticky post about using the website sparingly during transition only after posting those, sorry. Are those being synced, or should I repost them (I will find the text in the history)? I am signing in using OpenID, could that be related?

Cheers, edx.

Hi,

Do you remember the names of any of the threads you posted in where posts are missing? All updated threads should exist in new migrated versions.

I think (hope, the configuration is confusing) I have managed to raise the session timeout to 4 hours, let me know if you're still seeing problems with being logged out.

Were any in the Trolling Thread? There were one or two threads that I didn't update, but all were throw-away stuff. I still have copies of all of the threads. Anything specific you can remember? Know which threads?

Yes, I found those texts thanks to the Lazarus extension. I started two threads and did a few posts to existing non-troll ones.

The first thread was titled "Sleep problems - practice related?" and was posted on 2014-04-27 and there was 2 replies to it (one from someone else, one from myself); the text was something like
Hi everybody,
I've been doing samatha-like practices daily since 1998 and switched over to vipassana in 2011 - I've done 8 retreats in the Chom Tong tradition, with extended fruitions (from 20 minutes to 1 hour) occuring at least since the 3rd retreat.
I observed that usually about 4 weeks after the retreat (fruitions), I have very sound sleep, there is little mental noise going on during the day, and lots of mindfulness. Then there is usually about 4 weeks transition period with mood swings, non-specific stress building up (clenched teeth after waking up), phases of big tiredness altering with energetic states and high concentration, and very bad sleep - in some cases only a few hours in the entire night, usually 6 hours sleep, then practice (for the lack of doing something better at 5am), then 2 more hours of sleep. It is only rarely that the mind wakes up with some thought I could not get rid of spinning, it is really much less specific "tension" somewhere. Then progressively the mind stabilizes in a relatively dull region, where the swings are not so radical, but the state is unpleasant and any depth of experience is absent. I practice usually between 30/30-50/50 (walking/sitting) daily.
I tried to see if this could be explainable by the mind cycling through the POI stages, but there is no clear match really (though the stages are very clearly present at retreats, and were even during retreats when I knew nothing about those stages).
I am not sure if all this is practice-related; before starting vipassana, I had a few years of serious depression due to being (not just spiritual) perfectionist (MCTB 244: "In fact, buying into a strong renunciation trip is well known for making people quite neurotic, and then the challenge is to see the true nature of the sensations that make up the renunciation-induced neuroses." -- perfect description of my vipassana basic course, which lifted the depression big time, though there is some proclivity to melancholy and being out of touch with feelings).
In any case, I welcome any recommendation about practices which could help this (I've done some metta practices and also some samatha jhanas with making wishes for good sleep, as funny as it sounds) and also some explanation about what might be going on. (My girlfriend is not very excited when I say after 3 months since the last retreat that I need to disappear again for 10 days as I don't feel well anymore; she said I had a 3-month period ;) ).
I think I am quite fine with non-meditation conditions generally considered to support sleep - no coffee after 5pm, some sport (yoga, jogging), no heavy food in the evening, no alcohol and such.
The other threads was called "Daily Mahasi practice in combination with occasional samatha" posted on 2014-04-28, there was no reply to it as far as I checked, and the text was:
Hi everybody,
I am fairly new here. I've been doing daily non-buddhist concentration practices since 1998, then stopped in 2008 due to psychosomatic problems (spiritual perfectionism), went almost by accident to the basic course in the Ajahn Tong tradition in Dhammacari in 2011; that solved most by physical&neurotical troubles, I've done 8 retreats with various teachers from that tradition since then, with (extended) fruitions in last 2.5 years, and substantial changes to my personality (in good ways) and such.
In the Ajahn Tong tradition, concentration practices are really recommended against (they lead to attachment since they are pleasant, suck up a lot of energy, and don't lead to permanent uprooting of suffering - those are arguments I've heard).
In last few weeks, besides daily vipassana practice (usually 30/30 walking/sitting), I try to do 30-60 minutes of samatha (breath concentration) practices when I have time. When in a good shape (not tired and such), I go up to the 2nd or 3rd jhana, usually spelling out some intention when the practice is finished (regarding insight of mine or people close to me, or in general - sort-of like the traditional metta meditation); developing some basic siddhi would be welcome, though it is not the goal.
Contrary to what MCBT says, I don't seem to experience pleasant states during samatha (save for absence of unpleasant feelings, plus some kind of self-satisfaction from being able to make the mind very concentrated). After the practice, I usually have higher "energy level" (mind buzzing, but in a sort-of pleasant way), but also being less grounded (which already is my problem in daily live usually), as if slowed down externally and sped up internally.
So, well, the questions I am asking myself (and I welcome any comments on) are:
* how is the pleasure aspect to be cultivated? Is it desirable? My sense of pleasure has been rather damaged through my extreme renunciation before I started vipassana and learned to accept myself a bit, could that be the root cause, and perhaps also a thing I might deal with in samatha by focusing on the pleasure aspect? * is there an interference between vipassana and samatha, when practiced in separate sessions?* how strongly should I concentrate on the object (breath)? I am generally over-concentrated (being programmer, my usual problem when being with people, with headaches and such), perhaps I am missing the pleasure because I ignore it?* anything else basically emoticon
Cheers!
The other non-starters were in these threads: "Mahasi Sayadaw's Fruition training practice", "The power of resolutions, sewing your sits together" and a few others.

I am fine re-posting and losing what I posted, no big deal, since I have the text, but other may have issues as well.

Hi Dan,
I re-posted this here after noticing this thread. It looks like the Screen Name function wasn't working before the Migration 6.2 Daemon transfer to the new site, and instead people's real names appear on some old posts. Unfortunately, because the 'owner' of those posts is now the Migration 6.2 Daemon itself, not the original poster, it's not possible to edit the original (real) name. This site is awesome, and I’d like to post more things, but I also have bills to pay, etc. There could be a lot of professional backlash if anything is connected to my real name, and everything here is searchable by Google. Even if I use an alias from now on, it is still connected to the older posts. Any ideas?

Crap, that's a bad one, I wasn't really aware of that distinction when pulling out posts for the migration. Please mail me at "simon AT theoak.se" with real name vs. screen name and I will bulk update all posts, removing any instances of the real name. Sorry.

After looking into this I still don't get it. When is a screen name used in a post? Liferay is using first/middle/last name from what I can tell. But anyway, like I said, if there are names that need to be removed from the migrated posts mail them to me and I will clean it up immediately.

I don't notice a difference between links that have been viewed and links that have not been viewed.  My interest, of course is trying to scan 'recent posts' at a top level to decide what to look at.  It was not easy to do that before the upgrade, but it's harder now.

Don't know if this was mentioned yet, but when I insert a link in a post I've got the option to check whether the link is correct, but it' so tiny I can't possibly read it. Not that important, just thought I would mention it.

Not exactly something wrong, but I kind of miss breadcrumbs. So, a link displayed on top like this: home > category name > thread name. Basically it's an easy way to get up in the hierarchy.

Hello,

I haven't been on the forum in a while but just came on today and noticed that the layout looks broken on my Android device. I think this is the right place to post this. I took some screenshots to illustrate

I'm on latest Android on Nexus 5. I tried two different browsers with same results.

Hi Daniel,

I tried correcting links in an old post that didn't make it in tact through the migration, but the corrected links would not take. Instead they would either show up as an empty command like so (sans quotation marks):

" [url= "

or the link would link back to the thread without linking to what was originally in the link. It would also bring forward the corrected thread and place it into the "Recent Posts" area, when in the old system this would not occur.

Also, I've not been able to place links in threads that I compose. The links simply did not show up at all. Although I notice that others seem not to be having this problem. Funny.

Kind of makes one yearn for the old format, where things worked as they should.

With regret and frustration,

Ian

P.S. Perhaps my slow connection may be contributing to this problem. Not sure.

I hit "recent posts" and then browse through the threads looking for something interesting.

I believe the old DHO listed the category, or sub-forum, that the thread was in (ie.  'practice logs' or 'concentration') but now it's just a big list of uncategorized threads.

Category isn't listed in the thread after opening it, either.

(I could be the only one who used that information?)

Otherwise, great forum upgrade, thanks,

I am having this same problem. I am on Mac OSX 10.9.2 using Safari and the URL embed button in the text editor does not work.

For some reason I enjoyed the old layout and colors better as well.

When I went to post recently, the box for the body text (and all the associated buttons) did not appear, had to reload.

Using the link button, the thing that pops up for the URL, it's just too small I guess to be readable.  I had to just assume I cut and pasted it correctly and hope for the best.

I'm kind of thinking it would be cool to click on a thread and automatically go to the last post, but that might just be me.

EDIT: after getting some new emails I also would prefer the default to be no pingbacks, etc.

This is not a big deal but I thought I'd mention, when I subscribe to a thread and get a new comment sent to my email, it has the comment text but also a link just under the text.  The thing is, the link looks like a link but is not a actually clickable and if you cut and paste it, it does not work right and leads to some part of the board where, even if I am already logged in, I get this message: "You do not have the roles required to access this portlet."   Here is an example of the 'link' with a recent post: www.dharmaoverground.org Message Boards http://www.dharmaoverground.org/group/control_panel/manage?p_p_id=162&p_p_lifecycle=0&_162_struts_action=%2Fmessage_boards_admin%2Fview_message&_162_messageId=5558466 http://http://localhost  .  That's what happens in my yahoo email, don't know if it's the same for others but it's kinda confusing.

Any way to stop getting the email notifications, pingbacks or whatever?

For example I have the pingbacks turned off on my posts in this thread but still get the email every time someone posts.  I think the first post I didn't know about this feature, and then went back and turned it off thru editing, but I still get the emails.

Using the link button, the thing that pops up for the URL, it's just too small I guess to be readable.  I had to just assume I cut and pasted it correctly and hope for the best.

FWIW see below.  Same thing on the add image thing.

I've been having this exact same problem. I have to hit Ctrl+A to select the too-small text, delete it, and then paste the url in the box. This is not ideal as I can't really see what I am doing.

I'm using the Chrome Browser on a Chromebook.
