European DhO Meeting

Posts: 20 Join Date: 9/8/09 Recent Posts
Forum: Dharma Overground Discussion Forum

I found Dan's idea about getting together quite good like they did at the "Hurricane Ranch Dharma".

I would like to propose a similar meeting in Europe and here is my offer:
- Location: Munich
- Date: some Weekend in June or July 2009
- Possible program:
Friday: Chill out in a Biergarten (literally bier garden, one of those great south-german inventions, where the people eat, drink and enjoy the summer)
Saturday: Venezuelan breakfast and then a possible hike on the german-alps. In the night cooking and party at my place
Sunday: Chill-out, go back home

At my place can stay up to 5 people.

Suggestions or other possible programs/locations are welcome!

regards,

Guillermo

I am totally up for a European meeting, although I'm not sure (with work + costs) that I'll be able to do Germany. That said, I've been to Wacken Open Air every summer for the last several years so... I'll think it through and see what others want to do.

Hi Guillermo,
it is good that you took the iniciative and made up some plans. I cannot say if I can make it because my father is sick but if he gets better I am definitely in! I hope many other members will join, too.
Best wishes,
Martin

Hi Guillermo,
I'll be there, if it's a weekend *before* Jul. 4 (school vacations until Aug. 7, and family time has the highest priority).
Cheers,

Hi Guys

As usual, I am a bit slow around here. I am very interested in this. How about doing it virtual before going life? Skype may do multicast. We might also try http://www.loudtalks.com/ (I never tried it though)

Hey Florian, we may consider Zurich as well, since it is just around the corner from where we live.

Great Idea!
This is just a thouht now and I am not sure if it is even a good one but Pa Auk Sayadaw is leading retreats in Frankfurt in June and July I think. Maybe it would be interesting to combine the two things.
Best,
Martin

It looks like we may have a possible date for the meeting, thanks Doodle: 26./27./28. June. Even Hokai has shown interest!

Guillermo, Martin: want to show us when you might be able to join?

Cool. So far we have 3 options/suggestions for the location:
- Munich
- Zürich
- Frankfurt

Any other suggestion?

I propose to vote. My vote goes to Munich (only because of the bier... ;-))

@Martin: I like the idea, but I can't abstain from university for a whole week (august/september yes)

Munich and Zürich are both fine, I'd prefer Munich though as it's closer (for me), on the other hand I've never been to Zürich, I'd surely enjoy it as well.

Munich or Frankfurt - both are fine with me.

Zurich would obviously be very nice for me, as I live in a village near the Rhine north-west of Zurich. We only have one guest bedroom in our house, but we could set up make-shift beds in the living room (not as much privacy, though).

So if it's going to be "Zurich" (or nearby), we could do it at my place - it's very rural, though (last bus from Zurich is at 8:00 PM).

Cheers,
Florian

Hy everybody,
Frankfurt would be closest for me but I don´t really care where we do it.I just really cannot say for sure if I can make it. So just count me out of the discussion and I will say if I can when something is set up.
Best wishes,
Martin

Ummmm..... looks like we did not take a decision (we are all too polite ;-)).

In order to make things clear, please tell a vote for each possibility/place. Lets try it again:
- Munich: votes=1
- Frankfurt: votes=0
- Zurich (or near by): votes = 0

Gruss,

Guillermo

PS: at my place we have only 1 guest room, this means that the others can sleep on the coach or in sleeping bags (living room) (not as much privacy, though).

Next to the Lassalle Haus der is an old Villa that is also available from Friday evening until Sunday evening. We could have the whole house to ourselves including the small park with barbeque grill, basket ball court included. In case of bad weather there is plenty of room inside to hang around. The place is old but clean

http://www.lassalle-haus.org/

http://map.search.ch/edlibach/bad-schoenbrunn

Some other important details about the terms:

http://www.lassalle-haus.org/zentr/z_villa.php

Minimalbetrag
für Übernachtung (pro Gruppe und Nacht) 260.00
(this is up to 10 people, beyond that there is a charge per person)

Verpflegung vom Lassalle-Haus

Btw: is it possible to attach files to a post? I could attach the pdf-flyer

This is a possible venue I suggest from my side if people want to come to the Zurich area, but I'd happily come along to Munich as well.

Guillermo: Could you give us some details about your Munich proposal?

Hi Everyone!

sorry for the slow reply, but I was for a couple of days away.

@ Adrian: my proposal is right at the beginning of the thread.

For me is OK to go for Zurich.

Hi Guillermo

You are quite right I was a bit superficial in reading your proposal. Nevertheless (don't read me as a pessimist), what about rainy weather? I could ask around for a place if you need some help there.

As mentioned by Florian, may be we should give you the honor of hosting the DhO meeting the "first time", thanks for the initiative. Besides my proposal did not catch a lot of interest anyway, I am not even sure if the house is available by now since I could only make a tentative booking.

"my proposal did not catch a lot of interest anyway"

As for the interest, from my part it was there, but as you adressed Guillermo, I'd wait for him to reply first. Seriously, a whole villa would be very dignified ...
The other reason why I didn't post was that I'm fine with either place, so I would let you three, Adrian, Florian, Guillermo, decide on it ... maybe the silent rest was silent for similar reasons.

I am up for the plan near Zürich.

Hi Guillermo

I can try to find out if it is still possible. I revoked my reservation since it seemed we are all going to go to Munich. But let me find out one more time if the place is still free. We are still talking about 26. / 27. / 28. June, isn't it?

I will get back to you on that.

I have received a negative response from the Lassalle Haus. The place is now reserved for another happening. From my side I am pretty much out of ideas, where else to go.

Anybody else with ideas?

Hi all,

It turns out I won't be able to make it on June 26-28, because of other commitments, whereas previously scheduled weekends in July have now opened up.

Maybe we can re-schedule?

Hi Julius, good idea to start another plan. I am out of the country till Thursday night. Will try to get my schedule organized after that.

Judging from the previous comments it sounds like the 26th - 28th June DhO Meeting will not be happening realistically. Or is my feeling wrong here. As a matter of fact we do not have a meeting location.

Personally I feel very much for finding a location and meeting place that is conducive to discussion concerning Dharma practice. A place where we can have undisturbed talks for hours. The old villa of the Lassalle Haus is such a place but now I would say we have to be at least 6 people to make it worth the cost, 10 would or more would be ideal. So far I have not seen this number of people catching interest in DhO Meeting in Europe, so the old villa will be may or may not be a valid option. If I reserved the place I have to make a certain commitment for reservation and it will unlikely be available at short notice. I guess this is the case for any place the kind of our group should be looking for.

In my opinion we are looking for a date (this can be one or two days max.) at a fine location and some commitment to attending it. People from more distant places are unlikely to attend if dates and location shift to close to when things are supposed to happen. What do you think? Are commitments important here or can we find a flexible solution? How realistic is a commitment from your side? just wondering since apart from Julius nobody has been active on his doodle...

I agree with all of it. If I had a longer travel, I'd prefer buying train tickets a month or more ahead to get them cheaper. Flexible solutions seem to make it more complicated for people from far away and/or with responsibility for family/job (I've none).
I'd opt for a commitment, and maybe plan it far enough ahead that the people who were "interested but undecided/unsure" can join.
I like the idea of the villa, but maybe we can start with some other place more adequate (cheaper?) for ~6 people if there are not more interested. I admit I don't have any concrete suggestion, only the wish to make it happen one day :-)
