DhO Jabber/XMPP Chat
Mensajes: 1028 Fecha de incorporación: 28/04/09 Mensajes recientes
Hi DhO
as an experiment, I just set up a Jabber (aka XMPP) multi user chat for DhO users to hang out:
dharmaoverground on the server conference.draugr.de (edit: new, faster server)
For those unfamiliar with the Jabber protocol, it's an open standard for which many clients have been written. Most can be used free of charge.
A Wikipedia article on Jabber, pretty technical, for those interested in the details.
In short: you need a client and an account; both can be obtained for free.
Good free clients are Psi and Pidgin.
Once your client is installed, you can simply create a new account on a jabber server - the client software will guide you. Or just ask in this thead.
Jabber is slightly more complicated to use than, say, Skype, but it is not owned by a single company, has a large and geeky community, and several large companies also support it, most notably Google and Facebook. Unfortunately, Google talk, while a Jabber implementation, seems to be unsuitable for connecting to multi user chat rooms like the one I set up, though you can use your Google talk account from a Jabber client, and then it's possible to connect to the chat. Similarly, Facebook chat, while again a Jabber implementation, is locked in to Facebook's walled garden.
So - for those interested, feel free to drop in.
Cheers,
Florian

Tried w/ both Psi and Pidgin and failed. Guess I'm not geeky enough!
(are you sure the server name is right?)

Did you register a new account with some server?
In Pidgin, coose "Join a chat" from the Buddies menu. Then fill out: Room: DharmaOverground, Server: conference.jabber.org, Handle: (name you'd like to have in the chat).
If you send me your jabber id (username@server), I can also send you an invitation from the chat.
Cheers,
Florian

I was thinking of creating a Google Hangout. Video is pretty much a must those days. There was attempt on Kenneth Folk forum to maintain a permanent Hangout but I think it failed. Our souls are already owned by the evil corporations of this world. Why not just surrender to them? With the recent Wetpaint debacle, I can understand the sentiment but a chat isn't as much critical.
I tried to connect with Psi to the server you provide and I get a connection error.
To find me on Micro$oft $kype: simontanguay@hotmail.com

I am feeling a bit dense still:
downloaded Adium, nice green bird logo
got account on jabber: danielmingram@jabber.org
entered that into Adium: so far so good
where do I look enter or look for DharmaOverground in Adium or enter conference.jabber.org?

For Android devices, I can recommend the Xabber client.
For IOS, there seems to be a shortage of Multi User Chat capable apps - two that seem to have this feature are "Jabba" and "One Team". Unfortunately, both come with a price.
If someone finds a good IOS client, please post a review here.
I'll try to post a more friendly tutorial for how to configure Pidgin or Psi, with screen shots - but that may take a few days.
Oh, and please note that we moved to a faster server: conference.draugr.de It has a spooky name, but it really is more responsive than the jabber.org one.
Cheers,
Florian
