A great 2-hour conversation. Awesome that Dan Harris brings Pragmatic Dhamma to his massive mainstream following.

The second hour and right up to the end, it’s packed with some good stuff. Enjoy!

Just listened to the podcast. Really enjoyed it very much. I do have some questions for Daniel or whomever has knowledge or insight in this regard. Daniel mentioned that mediation was not the only pathway to enlightments; or some "stages" preceding along the path to enlightenment (using this term very broadly). I am a fairly dedicated practitioner of TM and to varying degrees of Metta practice. I believe each have helped me and have kept me balanced and increased complexity of thought - -which has been instrumental as I complete my dissertation. Can TM or Metta practice be used as vehicles for achieving enlightenment? My life does not allow for retreat, and TM has helped me in so many ways, and I feel there is still more there.

TM clearly is very helpful for a lot of people, but, for most, 20 minutes twice per day is a bit of a low dose for the deeper end of the pool, though there are exceptions.

If you are interested in going deeper but have a complex life, then you will have to make great use of mindfulness and investigation of the aspects of daily life that are conducive to investigation, meaning when not doing complex tasks that take more intellectual power.

Metta practice is also an excellent practice, and can be taken to some profound depths and produce some deep, transformative experiences for some if done in high enough dose. However, while it can definitely lead to insights in the insight practice sense of the term, that is not what it is designed for, so, if you are more interested in what insight can do, consider adding in some more specific insight practices also.

Might pick up Mindfulness in Plain English, by Bhanta Gunaratana.

Best wishes and practice well!

Daniel Thanks for responding and for the suggestions. In terms of dosing, what do you suggest would be a daily target to shoot for in relation to insight practices?

Just finished the episode today and it's what brought me here.  And it was an interesting twist because I just bought the book and didn't know the author's name until the book was mentioned early on.

Very interesting interview.

A good episode.  Dan seemed to get a little nervous when the siddhis came up at the end, though...

I'd argue metta is transformative for daily life in tiny doses emoticon

Yes the podcast was great!

Daniel:  One thing I wonder about Dan Harris is that he always says he has not experienced much of anything in terms of stages (or he always minimizes it when he speaks of his own experiences on the podcast).

But yet he has been meditating for close to ten years.  In recent years two hours a day with one or two retreats a year.

Yet he does not describe A&P, etc etc.

It would be disappointing if he is not making any progress......

Anything you can say on that topic?

While it is a reasonable question, I don't recall Dan saying that I could disclose what we have discussed regarding his practice, so, in the general spirit of confidentiality, you should probably ask him.

Best wishes!

Daniel
