To all those struggling on the path of insight, please heed the following advice:

Quit it. My dog is already more enlightened than you. So just stop already.

Bring it on Daniel.

Such enlightenment! Very more! emoticon

On the other hand, my dog inspected our trash can and ate all the coffee grounds. Quite awake, but not very enlightened, if I'm any judge.

Cheers,
Florian

If it's a well trained dog with good habits then yes.

Animals are naturally more present and cats are zen masters.

My sister informed me that our dog is a jhanic master. She's Japanese so I guess that's pretty zen.

Mu (negative)
A monk asked, "Does a dog have a Buddha-nature or not?"

The master said, "Not [Mu]!"

The monk said, "Above to all the Buddhas, below to the crawling bugs, all have Buddha-nature. Why is it that the dog has not?"

The master said, "Because he has the nature of karmic delusions".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A monk asked Master Joshu, "Does a dog have Buddha Nature?"

Joshu replied, "Yes."

And then the monk said, "Since it has, how did it get into that bag of skin?"

Joshu said, "Because knowingly, he purposefully offends."

That fits right in with the upended kitchen trash can.

Eckhart Tolle would say your dog has a "sub-ego" mind.  emoticon

We had a dog who unexpectedly bit someone's hand and would not let go (a cockerpoo) and so we investigated and found it had a past life that was quite traumatic which revivified when the lady allowed her dogs to threaten him.  emoticon   I dunno -- it seems he was not always a dog.

When my dog gets a really nice bone or some such, she carries it around and always worries about where it is and if someone else (like the cat) is going to steal it.  SOunds kind of backwards but sometimes I just take the bone away and store it for a while so she can relax and stop worrying about it all the time.  If I take it away, she worries for only a few seconds more and then gets over it.  My dog is also a big baby and acts like the world will end if I go somewhere without her and then she sits and pines and pines away until I get back.  I have seen dogs get in fights over a tennis ball even when  5 other tennis balls were also available and I've seen them fight over who gets the right to pee on a certain bush.  And I've seen them fight over what appears to be nothing at all.  So although they on average do tend to get over things faster than the average human, I have to personally say I don't think I've seen many that appear to have reached full enlightenment!  ;-P

I hear you there.    I recall a lifetime as a dog, running with a pack and having a hell of a good time, but still with the mind of a compulsive games player...still stuck in this universe, not knowing how I got in or how to get out.

Just realized my dog has as much "mind" as I do -- probably been a human and decided to take a break.   Her mind and my mind are not that much different -- when she sees the opportunity to play she is all out for it, but when no one wants to play she sits quietly.  A sensation hound, just like me. In fact, she is better at "sitting" than I am -- I'm taking a lesson from her.

I once had a dream where I was a dog that could recall a past life as a human.

Or was it a butterfly...
