I figured it might be fun to see and hear everyone....
The nice thing about appear.in is that you don't need to download and plugins, programs, accounts etc....barrier to entry is pretty much clicking on a button that allows camera/mic to be shared.

Does anyone have a good sense of how much data one uses in video chatting if one is dependent on a phone's cellular plan to hotspot these chats? I'm paying a fortune for 5GB and really, really don't want to use above that.

They have an API that make it easy to embed a join button on a page or even embed the whole conference in a page. It would be probably quite easy to have an extra tab "Chat" on the dharmaoverground in which the conference would be embedded.

Yeah, you'd probably want to fix a standard time and day (let's say Saturday morning US time/afternoon Europe time?), and then announce it on the board every week...

But you can click on the online friends in the lower right corner and invite soemone.
