Samatha jhanas

(You are viewing an archived version of this page. (2.9), Go to the latest version.)

The Samatha Jhanas is the Pali name for the Stages of Concentration. This list is derived from the original Theravada texts and tradition, but is a very good and accurate description of the standard, natural states that one progresses through when learning to concentrate and get into the meditative states that concentration leads to.

The standard list of states are known by their numbers, and thus are:

The next four are called The Formless Realms, and these arise from The Fourth Jhana. They are named for their overriding qualities, and are:

These are followed by jhanas not explicitly mentioned in the Theravada Texts but occur anyway, namely:

There is also an attainment that is related to these but is not quite a concentration state called Nirodha Samapatti aka The Cessation of Perception and Feeling, sometimes simply referred to as Nirodha, though Nirodha may also mean Fruition, so clarify if there is ambiguity.

I find that I can't open up most of the highlighted categories which is really frustrating as I would like to study them. Instead, when I click to enter most of the blue or red categores, a sign comes up saying that I don't have the required permission to enter. Is this site down or do I need some extra permission to read these descriptions?
Hi Carole, I'm new to the Dharmaoverground and was curious as you are. On the wiki page, point 1 says "Things in red are links that haven't yet had their pages create: if you want to have a hand in creating them, see the next point:
2. Authorship is restricted. If you want to be a Wiki Author, let a Wiki Moderator or DhO Administrator know. We want to keep this of high quality."

this will help somewhat. But it could be good if you also checked the keywords in google.

If the topic of interest for are the Absorptions, the Jhanas maybe this practical books by Ayya Khema's Who is My Self? might be of interest.

She takes us through the 4 material and the 4 non-material jhanas.

When I want to listen to Ayya Khema, one of the site I use the most is the Dhammaseed site @ http://dharmaseed.org/teacher/334/.

Her talks on the Jhanas that i repeatedly come back to are the ones recorded at Gampo Abbey:

1. http://dharmaseed.org/teacher/334/talk/7665/
2. http://dharmaseed.org/teacher/334/talk/7666/

Enjoy, Georges
