There was an excellent documentary on BBC here in the UK which showed an experiment with simlar apparatus, here's a link but unfortunately the whole documentary isn't there to view:

What I find funny is that the use of such a device is likely about as effective in eliminating suffering as is 'disembedding from the sense of self."
