Two of the biggest obstacles to concentration are stress and mental fatigue. I find that relaxing meditation is very helpful in developing access concentration.

If you try the above link, once you are fully relaxed sit up and do sitting meditation. I use that as a samatha type practice that I do as preparation for insight meditation.

I go by this definition of access concentration by Leigh Brasington:

http://www.leighb.com/accesscon.htm
Access Concentration is a state where you are fully with the meditation object (breath) and if there are thoughts, they are wispy and in the background and do not pull you away from the breath - you know every in breath and every out breath.

Hi Aya R Bh,

Leigh Brasington's book is a must. But Jim's suggestions on relaxation as foundational work are great too.

For critiques and other ways of thinking about the situation with "access concentration", I recommend David Johnson's book The Path To Nibbana. There's a free PDF of it.

I wrote up some tips here: https://www.dharmaoverground.org/discussion/-/message_boards/view_message/25580295#_com_liferay_message_boards_web_portlet_MBPortlet_message_25626845

If I understand access concentration correctly (e.g. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/gunaratana/wheel351.html#ch1.3), it's a pretty low-level state, a prelude to jhana. If that's accurate, it's not a one-time thing; you can pretty much access it whenever you want (although it may be difficult in times of extreme emotion).
