New Mahasi translation--Manual of Insight

Mensajes: 59 Fecha de incorporación: 9/09/09 Mensajes recientes
Greetings.
I thought the Dharma Overground crowd might be interested in this Buddhist Geeks mag article I did on the first translation available in the West of Mahasi Sayadaw's two-volume Manual of Insight. To me, the interesting wrinkle here is that the senior vipassana teacher behind this translation effort had as a specific goal introducing the Progress of Insight to a wider audience of practitioners. Also noteworthy is that some of the founders of Western vipassana ended up agreeing with him that there is a big downside to not teaching people the states and stages of the path. A bit of anti-mushroom push-back, yo.
Enjoy!

Thank you for posting that, Joel. It was totally worth the read if only for the pleasure of hearing a western Dharma teacher talk about a student attaining to first path emoticon

Do you know if there's some preview version available online for those of us too impatient to wait until it's out in print?

Hi Eran.
LOL. Exactly--you mean those path things are REAL?!
Steve mentioned that he has a PDF of Chapter 5 that he sometimes sends out to people. I'll will try to get a copy of it from Steve and will ask him if he would mind me sending it to you or anyone else who requests it. In the meantime, if you want to use the Dharma Overground to e-mail me your personal e-mail address, I'll be able to send the attachment once I receive it from Steve.
Thanks!

Chapter 5 is the full text of Practical Insight Meditation, only it's a different translation. To have the whole text in PDF form is seriously bad-ass.

Thank you!

Thank you!

And it's a quite different translation, with some extra notes for clarification, from my printed BPS copy or the first section that is available here: aimwell.org.

Thanks again to Joe and to the translators/editors. I look forward to being able to see the whole thing.

from the section on Mind and Body:
...When ordinary people experience this realization of mind and body in their meditation, they are pleased and tend to have thoughts such as: “Nothing exists but mind and body. There is only the rising of the abdomen and the mind noting it; only the falling of the abdomen and the mind noting it; only the sitting posture and the mind noting it; only the bending movement and the mind noting it. What we call a human being is nothing but these two kinds of phenomena. Except for these two phenomena there is nothing else. Also what we call a woman or man is only these two phenomena. Except for these two phenomena there is no independent person or being.”

When people with scriptural knowledge clearly experience physical sense objects, the sense bases, and the knowing mind, they are pleased and tend to reflect on it in this way: “It really is true that there are only mental and physical phenomena. In a moment of noting, what I really experience are the noted physical phenomena and the noting mind. The same is true at other times, too. There is no ‘woman,’ ‘man,’ or other living being that exists independent of these phenomena. All that really exists are the present moment’s mental and physical phenomena. These phenomena are commonly called a person, being, woman, or man. But these are merely names. In reality, there is no independent ‘person,’ ‘being,’ ‘woman,’ or ‘man,’ only the mental and physical phenomena that are experienced while noting them.”

When these kinds of reflections arise, the mental state of reflecting itself should be noted as “reflecting, reflecting.” Then, one returns to the primary object and notes it uninterruptedly.

Yes! ("fist pumping, fist pumping")

Thanks for posting. This one is much more detailed than the Google Books "Progress of Insight" version... that one also doesn't even include the portions on clarifying vipassana knowledes or attaining higher paths.

Has anyone heard more recent news about the progress of the translation project? The article posted said that the book should be ready to send off to the publishers... uhh, now. Not that I want or expect them to rush it. I'd just like to know what stage they're at.

(Forewarning: If anyone says that the book is being proofread or edited, I'm going to make a really buddhist-geeky joke that it's at the reobservation stage. You've Been Warned.)

I e-mailed Steve for an update a few weeks ago, actually.
At the time, he said the translation team is still working to finalize its work on the Manual of Insight. The three translators are all very busy and are kind of spread around the world, so they've been unable to work on the text full-time. But Steve said they've made a lot of progress: The Pali spell check is now half done. All Pali quotes have been footnoted/sourced to Pali text editions available in the West. The English-Pali and-Pali-English glossaries are nearly done. A few final questions on meaning need some research with scholar-monks when the translation team reconvenes in Burma this month. Steve hopes to send the text to a publisher after that! I'll try to post something as soon as I hear some more news from Steve. Thanks!

New Mahasi translation--Manual of Insight

Mensajes: 59 Fecha de incorporación: 9/09/09 Mensajes recientes
Greetings. Some of you might remember this article I wrote a couple of years ago for the now-defunct Buddhist Geeks magazine.

http://www.buddhistgeeks.com/2010/04/the-practical-dharma-of-mahasi-sayadaw/

Steve e-mailed me recently to say that a potential publisher wants to get a sense for whether there's really a market for this book. If you'd buy it--and let's go ahead and assume it'll be a little more expensive than your usual feel-good dharma book as it's a longish translation with lots of footnotes and even a section in Pali--if you could respond to this thread with an "I'll buy it," I'd appreciate it. Steve says a head count sample of interested readers like this could help get the book published. (If you've already done this over at KFD, no need to repeat here.)
Thanks!

I don't want to commit without knowing about the price but I'm sure very interested. It's a 700 pages book so we should expect it to be cheap. We seriously need this kind of work translated in English. Once every yogis will carry such book, the culture will change radically.

Hi all,

I did some googling a while back and found this:
Reply from Steve Armstrong

If you scroll a bit to the end you'll find it. It seems this reply was written in februari 2012.
After reading it, I inquired by Wisdom Publications weeks ago, but they have yet to reply.

Hello everyone. If any one is French speaking on this site this might interest you. I have translated the BPS version of the English translation of that book (complete version) into French. It is being revised now for being included in the French Theravada website www.dhammadana.org and might also get included in the French section of www.truenorthinsight.org.
Once it gets included in those site I will let you know. But if anyone is interested I could send you, via email, a copy of it.
I got permission from BPS to distribute it freely.

metta,

Benoit

Qu'est-ce que "PM" veut dire? Mon nom est Benoit Santerre. J'ai changé mon nom ici car je voulais pas que des clients où je travailles me trouve dans des contextes autres que mon travail. J'ai esseyé Ben mais beaucoup avait déjà ce nom donc je suis venu avec le nom Ben Vipassana.

Hello, Dhamma Geeks, Dhamma overground denizens and other on-line forum followers,
You may be happy to hear that in December 2014, Wisdom Publications accepted our translated ms of Mahasi Sayadaw's 2-vol. Manual of Insight

the Dhamma literature available in the West. They indicated their intent
to publish it in hardcover with paper jacket and cloth bookmark (their
best quality), along with the 6 Appendices of abhidhamma material that I
created that are necessary to understand what is referred in the ms. as

Because I discovered that swimming meditation is so powerful espacially if you do it with the noting technique...
then you go in a cave and miracles fold up for you
that's true eperience, may you have the chance to try it soon.

My bad...Here's a better source

http://docslide.us/documents/insight-manual-cha-5.html

When downloading from docslide, it seems the whole filename is enclosed in single quotes ie. 'docslide.us_insight-manual-cha-5.pdf'

You might have to remove the quotes so the the filename is, docslide.us_insight-manual-cha-5.pdf

I hope that makes sense...

Thanks a lot Yash! This is still only chapter 5, though. Have you got the other chapters too?

This book –"Mahasi Sayadaw's 2-vol. Manual of Insight"is the same book as the 'THE TREATISE ON THE METHOD OF VIPASSANA INSIGHT MEDITATION', translated into English in 1984 by one U MIN SWE (Min Kyaw Thu). Both titles are described (the 1st one in the B-Geek article/interview by Steve Armstrong,  and the 2nd one by U Min Swe in the introduction) as written in 1944, taking seven months to write, and while the Japanese were bombing nearby. Moreover, I have compared the newly translated Chapter 5 (thanx for making that available) with the same chapter in the 1984 translation – definitely the same material, though the newer one is better structured and easier to read.

And PDFs of the full book (eariler translation, 4 files) are still available at the saraniya website that was mentioned above by Gunnar Johansson (10/4/14 6:35 PM as a reply to George S. Lteif.):

http://www.dharmaoverground.org/web/guest/discussion/-/message_boards/message/443445?_19_keywords=&_19_advancedSearch=false&_19_andOperator=true&_19_resetCur=false&_19_delta=75#_19_message_5598094

That's the same website I also referred to recently as offering a gazillion (actually only about 175) freely downloadable dhamma books (though the files for this Treatise are NOT on that list I found).
http://www.dharmaoverground.org/web/guest/discussion/-/message_boards/message/5760726

btw. This is the also same book that I quoted extensively recently here in DhO – where it appears that Mahasi did NOT use the term "vipassana-jhana" (at least in 1944), but rather the terms "vipassana-samadhi" and "vipassana-khanika-samadhi".
http://www.dharmaoverground.org/web/guest/discussion/-/message_boards/message/5760551#_19_message_5761746

It was Joel Groove (author of the B-Geek article/interview, and author of the OP in this thread) who wrote that this is the "first translation available in the West". Steve Armstrong was not quoted as saying that. Perhaps the 1984 translation wasn't that well known in 2010 (date of the article and the OP here).

So, it looks like the new English translation might be more readable, but the earlier one is available now (and "given freely"), for those eager to get into it. (I will also get the new translation when available, as comparing translations is always worthwhile). But be aware, as Armstrong and the earlier translator make clear, this book is not for beginners.

And the Treatise provides more evidence that Mahasi Sayadaw himself taught the traditional definitions of the four stages, and hence that it was Bill Hamilton who originated the notion that these definitions were "unscientific":

The Second stage of Magga will subdue all forms of coarse kāmarāga and prevent taṇhā from arising to the extent of its faculty only to pass through not more than two existences. The Third stage of Magga will exterminate the subtle form of kāmarāga (sensual desires) and kāmataṇhā (sensual craving).

Enjoy!

The most comprehensive manual of the practice of insight meditation (vipassana), written by one of its foremost 20th century proponents, is translated into English for the first time.

Manual of Insight
is the magnum opus of Mahasi Sayadaw, one of the originators of the
“vipassana movement” that has swept through the Buddhist world over the
last hundred years. The manual presents a comprehensive overview of the
practice of insight meditation, including the foundational aspects of
ethical self-discipline, understanding the philosophical framework for
the practice, and developing basic concentration and mindfulness. It
culminates with an in-depth exploration of the various types of insight
and spiritual fruits that the practice yields.

In the book itself, page xxiii of "Managing Editor's Preface", it states (apparently from Steve Armstrong):
"In 2000 I learned that Mahasi Sayadaw's comprehensive and authoritative Manual of Insight had never been translated into English…."

What's going on here?

In 1984, U Min Swe (Min Kyaw Thu) translated it into English, under the title: Treastise on the Method of Vipassana Insight Meditation.

It's claimed that Sayadaw U Pandita (who passed away a couple of weeks ago) "advised" the project. How could he have not known about the 1984 translation?

Armstrong's information in 2000 may well have been in ignorance of the 1984 work, but he must of learned about it since. How then can he now assert (in the new book) "had never been translated into English"???

If I can find an email address for him, I will ask Armstrong to explain this.

Perhaps it is discussed in the buddhist geeks reference above?

would someone who ordered a copy want to compare the two?

I thought I'd read or heard somewhere that this new translation team was working on the basis of the 1984 translation. Apparently not, as it's not mentioned at all, that I can find, in the new book.

"would someone who ordered a copy want to compare the two?"
Sure. I'll be doing that, sooner or later, as I've already looked through the whole of "volume i part i", where he, among other topics, makes clear the relationship and differences between jhana-samadhi and vipassana-khanika-samadhi.  It's amazing (for one into hard-core Theravada suttas, commentaries, and subcommentaries) -- the scope of his knowledge of the texts and his intrepretative ingenuity .

This may take a couple of years, though, what with looking up all the Pali terms to read the Canon passages quoted (which actually are the core from which Mahasi works). -- the new book has the Pali in footnotes, where the old trans had the Pali in line, without translation (except at places where Mahasi himself did rather detailed translation and analysis, word for word, to make big points).

btw: you've supplied links for just 2 of the 4 pdf files of the 1984 translation; all 4 links are given (earlier in this thread) at:
http://www.dharmaoverground.org/web/guest/discussion/-/message_boards/message/443445#_19_message_5598094
all of which still work (just re-tested them)

"I have Steve's email if you need it"
Yes, if you could pass it along, e.g. thru PM. I probably missed something describing the relation of the new to the earlier translation; would like to get it clear.

Thanx

I have had the same question, When I first opened it, I was like, "Is this even the same book??"  I think it is, in a seven chapters vs. a seven chapters sort of way, but.......  The New Translation is far easier, in my opinion, to understand, and derive Wisdom and Instruction from.  Also, the book, and the binding seems to be made at a superior level of craftmanship, as far as bookbinding goes.  There are also charts, which I have not opened yet.

I will admit I have not read much yet, and it will take a while.  It is one of those books where you read a section, page or so, it blows your mind a little, and you need time to assimilate and practice what was read.

Also, to add, when reading the book, it is also like reading a description of one's own perception of the way things are, at least if one has experienced the Insights, contemplations, etc. that Mahasi Sayadaw is expounding upon.  Which , for me, is different than reading the online version, a different experience entirely.  I could not get in tune with the onine version, but the Hardback version is very easy to tune in to.

That is all I got for now...

Okay, They seem to be translations of the same source book, but the two definitely do not line up line by line or sentence by sentence.  It is just about the same as reading different books, it is just that different.  Yet, it  still covers covers the same content.  If that makes sense...emoticon

"I was thinking of the 30 second comparison, are they translations of the same thing? and are they both complete? (compared to each other)"
Here's a quick comparison -- which took a couple of hours…

Definitely translations of the same thing. Back last year (above in this thread at 7/29/15 5:16 AM as a reply to neko) I found the sample "Chapter 5" that had been released at that time did match the 1984 translation; and the descriptions of the writing (place, time, circumstances) matched.

Also, when first opening the new book and searching for some reference to the 1984 translation, I did compare the opening passages -- s/w differently structured but definitely the same material.

Some quick/rough estimates (engineer's back-of-an-envelope-type sketching, which usually works out to be ca. 90% accurate):
2016 version has 528 pages with about 40 lines per page, ca 12 words/line;
1984 version 1036 pages with about 30 lines/page, ca. 10 words/line (a larger font size).
Facit: 2016 version uses ca. 20% less words in its English.

Today I compared the ending passages – They're the "same" – I find recognizable similarities in the last couple of paragraphs, but a lot more text in the 1984 version that doesn't seem to appear, or is somehow short-cutted, maybe summarized (or "interpreted") in the 2016 version.

The original was composed in Burmese language, and uses very complex syntactic structures, as seen in the 1984 rendering. For a reader lacking some background in decoding more complexly inflected languages (Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Pali,…), reading the 1984 version's English, is probably a challenge. My sense is that the 2016 version attempts to 1) make it more "readable", and 2) simplifies the text. A question  might be, is this also 3) interpretation, or even distortion of the original?

Very end (2016 version):
"Given this fact, the commentary states that insight knowledge of change-of-lineage, which does not require adverting consciousness, is the most appropriate function for contemplation of turning away. One can take whichever view on finds most suitable on this issue."

Corresponding (1984 version), but not the very end:
"Therefore, for not being feasible to say or preach about Avajjana in the interests of Vivattānupassanā, determination has been made showing reasons that it would only be appropriate to take the view as : - "Only Gotrabhū-Nāṇa is know as Vivattānupassanā.""

"One can take whichever view on finds most suitable on this issue" is not found here (1984); maybe that sentence corresponds to the 1984 opening of the paragraph: "In fact, reflective consciousness (avajjana) of different knowledges should be preached separately."

In this ending section, the 1984 version seems to have a lot more text. The 2016 version ends with "Here ends chapter 7 regarding the great insight knowledges"; 1984 version has there "End of Chapter (7)", but also has a further section-- "CONCLUSION" going on another 6+ pages, which seems to describe the circumstances of the writing of the book, and information about Mahasi – so probably not written by Mahasi himself. BUT the very end it (1984) states: "End of the Text of Dhamma on the Method of Vipassana Insight Meditation"

Facit: The 1984 and 2016 "translations" are of the same original material (if there was only one original version?), but structured (headings, subheadings,…) differently, and substantially different in specific textual renderings.

re: Dream Walker (5/28/16 10:50 AM as a reply to CJMacie)

The last post was more factual textual analysis, comparing the 1984 and 2016 translations. Here are more personal reactions (possible biased):

Again, from page xxiii (Steve Armstrong's preface):
"In 2000 I learned that Mahasi Sayadaw's comprehensive and authoritative Manual of Insight had never been translated into English."
How did he learn, determine that? Someone told him? Whatever way, it's clearly based in ignorance. Another translation exists, the translator's preface dated April 10,1984. Or is that dating perhaps considered fraudulent?

(I've sent an email query about this to meditate@maui.net, home base of Steve Armstrong's sangha, rather then, at first, try to address him personally. On page xxix of the book it says to goto www.mahasimanualofinsight.org to see a page of corrections or to report "errors", but there appears – at this time -- nothing of the sort at that URL.)

Page xxvii:
"This Manual of Insight offers a detailed description of the theory and practice of mindfulness that leads to insight knowledge and the realization of nibbana that is unavailable in contemporary English-language Dhamma writings.
"
Is that an intentional, or just incidental slight on the extensive writings of, for instance,Thanissaro Bhikkhu, and many others?

Page xxix:
"The inclusion of [1] copious, accurately cited sources in the Pali Canon and [2] detailed supplementary abhidhamma materials within this book sets it clearly apart from the majority of Western or non-Burmese books on the subject."
1) The 1984 translation shows the Pali citations, with clear indication of sources; were they erroneous?
2) That material does look very interesting (to my abhidhamma-leaning mind) – especially the huge sheet of charts (in a pocket inside the back cover). Daniel Ingram (author of similar charts) might find these interesting.

"We are grateful for the guidance of the editors at Wisdom who have helped us to strike a happy balance between a very faithful translation of Mahasi Sayadaw's writing in his own voice and smooth readability in English."
This confirms what I've seen so far in textual comparison – the original has been to some extent compromised to suit Western (i.e. IM/VM?) sensibilities. One can't help but notice how, up-front, Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield are prominently quoted in the advertising; and the book's two Forwards, by Joseph Goldstein and Daniel Goleman – the latter (some best-selling psychologist celebrity) sounding quite a mushroomy psychological tone (a perfect example of Than-Geoff's 'Buddhist Romanticism').

re: Psi (5/28/16 1:18 PM as a reply to Dream Walker;  and 5/28/16 10:13 PM as areply to Psi)

"The New Translation is far easier, in my opinion, to understand, and derive Wisdom and Instruction from."
Granted, much "easier" to read, but are the "Wisdom" and "Instruction" from the two versions the same? (A bias perhaps surfacing on my part tothe recurrent theme in secular and pragmatic dharma that there must be an easier, therefore better way… oh well.)

"Yet, it  still covers covers the same content.  If that makes sense...
"
Looks like you might sense the problem also – what makes the content the "same" (other than the original Burmese text) ?

It is, though, something of a game-change to see the IM/VM (aka mushroom farm) establishment dangling its toes in more "hardcore" dharma. Maybe Daniel's (and others') efforts are getting through? Or a defensive ploy to maintain authority… emoticon

Yes indeed, it seems there was already a tranlation in English... hmmmm..

Again, I agree, there have been, and are multiple teachers showing the Dhamma, in English, in writing, in full.

"We are grateful for the guidance of the editors at Wisdom who have helped us to strike a happy balance between a very faithful translation of Mahasi Sayadaw's writing in his own voice and smooth readability in English."

Yes, it always gets watered down a little, for example the words jhana and dukkha, in my opinion, have never been translated to English properly, because, in my opinion,  there is no single word in English for either  jhana or dukkha....

re: Psi (5/28/16 1:18 PM as a reply to Dream Walker;  and 5/28/16 10:13 PM as areply to Psi)

Hmmm, easier perhaps in understanding what has already been understood and experienced.
And, I would like to add , alot of times a deeper level of Dhamma opens up.
So, Easier, may not necessarily be Deeper, as far as Understanding is concerned.

"Yet, it  still covers covers the same content.  If that makes sense..."
Looks like you might sense the problem also – what makes the content the "same" (other than the original Burmese text) ?
Yeah, it all remains to be seen, it is really all in the practicing.  It does seem, from what I can tell initially, that the descriptions of the Dhamma experiences, or rather contemplations, do seem to line up rather well with the experience I have been going through.  So there does seem to be a core of Mahasi Sayadaw's thought formations lurking under the Translations, of either rendition being considered.

In other words, Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching seems to come through despite the various translations, but then again, the actual practice goes beyond words, either Burmese or English,  at a certain point anyway.  At some point on the Path one has to switch the practicing away from just the thought sensations and work at the level of the nerve signals and glandular secretions, sorting even those as to what is skillful and unskillful.  So, from that vantage, language does not even work, except in a post hoc fashion anyway.  Hope that makes sense.

It is, though, something of a game-change to see the IM/VM (aka mushroom farm) establishment dangling its toes in more "hardcore" dharma. Maybe Daniel's (and others') efforts are getting through?
Yay!?

Or a defensive ploy to maintain authority… emoticon
